Who is with me?

OH!! You mean a lid on THE JAR!! I see!! Whew...that was just bad! My son was scrolling through the posts and, when he went past your recommendation there, it hit me!! If I remember correctly, I want to keep the internal temp of that egg at about 100, right? Is 101 okay? I can see how the jar will help with the temps in the morning, but is it okay to get that high in the evenings? I am assuming that it is happening due to the ambient temperatures, as the house heats up throughout the day...

100 to 101 is fine. And it is because the house heats during the day, in small incubators it's just a "feature". Another reason I went bigger and better insulated when I build my own.

When I checked on turklettes this morning, the little black one had developed splayed legs. I got a band-aid and splitted the little guys legs and put some poly-vi-sol in their water. Little fella is doing good now. Both are eating and drinking well.

Like Steve of S and S Poultry always says: "Everybody loves a Turkey!"

AAAAHHH!! I just went to roll my eggs and I was thinking about the fact that my guinea eggs were in the back and they would need to be up front, as they will be turned after the others are left to sit...so I decided to move my silkies to the back and my guineas up front. I was holding too many eggs, trying to hurry AND I DROPPED ONE OF MY SILKIE EGGS!! It hit my foot and rolled off, but it got a whole bunch of cracks in it. I grabbed a candle and got some wax onto them, but I am afraid that I may have done too much damage... I figured that we will have to do a "sniff text" every day, but I am hoping for one of those miracle hatches, as I just can't bring myself to toss it, considering it a goner.

Insulation is definitely a good reason to build my own bator, I guess...that and better viewing abilities!

Aw Riqui I am sorry. I just dropped a developing GCM egg during my last hatch. You could have shot me and I'd have thanked you. It happens. It's just awful but, you gotta just take it. Part of handling eggs is the good with the bad. Remember hens break them too. Maybe it'll hold...

Okay, Riqui, if that eggs is due to hatch soon, it may just be all right, don't give up hope, 3 days is not long.

As for my peachick, it did not make it, but 2 others have hatched out since the, a lot of yellow with spots of brown. They are adorable and have 3 more in the bator.

I have been very busy, so I have to run. I will get back with you all this evening.

Good luck everyone.

Hello! How is everyone?

Chickie_mama: How are those adorable turklettes doing? How is the splayed leg issue coming along or is it cured by now?

CB: How are your two babies doing?

And the big bator you're working on, WWD? How is that coming along?

All is goign well with my incubation right now. My temps have been stable, with my playdough egg staying around 100 consistently (thank you for that tip, WWD). The humidy has been a different issue, as the humidity here is fluctuating a lot, but it never gets "too bad" so I am okay.

I candled the egg that I dropped and it looks as if it is still developing. There is veining there, although the veins up around the embryo look thick to me. I guess that time will tell.

I still can't see through those darn guinea eggs (like the shells will get thinner over time! lol). I am just going to wait and see on those. I am having the same problem with some of my Araucana eggs. Oh well...what can you do? I guess that I will be surprised!

I hope everyone is having a great day!!

I'm working on Goliath

and enjoying it. I'm working at stripping down the old varnish (omg they trowelled it on) I'm having to restrip every section twice. Getting the old gunk out of the main casing and cleaning the humidity pan has been an adventure.

Some of the egg racks are partially broken, I figure to patch them back up with one of the good marine epoxies. But it made me wonder if I could rig a couple of the trays without racks for use with automatic turners.

I guess you could hatch successfully for decades without cleaning it. EWKKY. But the areas I have gotten cleaned, repaired and re-stained are looking good. I'll top coat with spar varnish when it's all done, that should put it good for another few decades.

I think I've gotten all the spiders now... ewk.

Turklettes are good although they both remain nameless for now. The little black one still has his splint on but leg seems to be getting better. I'll take it off this weekend to see if it has healed or if it still needs more splint work.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Come on guys.... I need your help.

Little black turklette needs more splintage. I believe his problem is with his hip joint. When I hold the joint in place, both feet are pointed in the correct position. When I just leave them alone, the right foot is pointed at 12:00 and the left foot is at either 8:00 or 9:00.

I have cut strips of ace bandage and tried wrapping those all the way around his little body, but that just seens too constricting for him.

What can I do to actually help hold his hip joint in place?????

PS: I've already posted this in the "Turkey" section.
