Who Is Your Stupidest Hen?

I have 3 Buff Orphintons. I can't tell them apart so I just call them the blondies. I think they compete to see who is dummer every day.

At night I bring all the girls in to their evening house from the tractor. My 3 barred rocks walk out the door scurry across the yard and head into heir lit coop. The Buff's go to the back of the tractor and try to walk out through the hardware cloth. So then I have to flip over the tractor to they can get out. Then they get stuck behind the stock fence that I use to separate the dogs from the chicks. These chicks we all hand raised and cuddled everyday. My Speckled Sussex and Bared rocks are like pets. They follow me around the yard. There always squacking at me and are easy to pick up when I need to put them in the tractor. The blondies are like some sort of wild pheasants, as soon as they see me rounding up the other girls., the tear off into the brush/bushes all around the yard. When I look at the speckled sussex and barred rocks I see cherished pets that are also useful. When I looks at the Buffs all I see is dinner!

I have two silkie hens at laying age. One is black (Betty) and one is white (Yin). Betty went broody, so I got some eggs off eBay and put them under her. At the time, Yin was still laying.

Even though I had the nesting box split into two very nice, clean, roomy nests, Yin would insist on squeezing herself in with Betty to lay her egg! I was constantly checking under Betty for newly laid eggs from Yin, because if I didn't get them out from under Betty, they would start developing along with the eggs Betty was sitting on! It was a pain!

Here is a pic of Yin in action:

Since this pic was taken, Yin has gone broody and was "helping" Betty by sitting in the nest box with her 24/7! I finally broke down and bought Yin a clutch of eggs of her own and put them in the nest where she was supposed to be laying in the first place, in the hopes she would sit on them there and leave poor Betty alone! Luckily, it did the trick, and Yin's eggs are due to hatch the day after Thanksgiving.

Betty's eggs have hatched, and I posted pics of her and her new chicks here:

I think I have a genius bird. hee hee

Last week, I was out of town and my father was caring for our chickens. He called me to relay the story. He went out as usual and out sweetest darling BlueBelle came to him as usual wanting to be picked up and spoiled. Well, this time she wasn't alone because Honey and Buttons also wanted a piece of the action (very unusual) so he had all 3 girls up and crawling all over him. They were up his arm, on his shoulders, and just playing him like a jungle gym. He told me that when he tried to put one down, she wouldn't leave him. BlueBelle finally got down and walked to the water dish which had somehow gotten emptied (possibly the ducks got into it) and pecked at the dry pan. Only after Dad put water in the bucket did the girls leave him alone.

They were trying to tell him they were out of water. Only it took after Blue was not subtle for him to notice. So my dumb one turned out to be my own Daddy!
