Who knew a closet could work so well

My little dare devils kept falling out of the tub we used as a brooder. We had an exercise pen around it so when they fell... or jumped they would fall between the tub and gate. They were in our garage and I would find them when I would go check on them. I was worried they would get hurt or get cold. After this happening a few times I decided to use the closet in our spare bedroom as their brooder until I move them out in a couple weeks. I think it actually works well and I don't have to worry about a heat lamp and if I needed to I could still use it. I have a small heater...not the kind that catches fire..and also have a baby gate up so I can leave the door open. I think I will do this going forward when I have chicks. Hopefully that wont be too often. Anyone else use a closet or room in the house?

Do you have anything down under the shavings to protect the floor? That's what I would worry about.
I haven't used a closet, but I have a corner of the basement I use as a brooder.

Were is the heater in the picture? They look like they are 1-2 weeks old? They need to have an area of the brooder thats 85 degrees based on their age. Nice setup! I would also worry about the floor, guessing your prepared for that risk though?

I have used a box on the laundry room floor before but never again will I have chicks in my actual house. The amount of dust and dander that gets on eveything is too much for me. Now I use a big wire dog kennel in the garage

When I brood chicks, I'm going to start raising them outside if I plan on keeping them.

Only thing I'd worry about is mould and a bad smell in the houseperhaps you've got a plan in place to deal with that problem.
If its carpet under the shavings then that will properly stink!

You’re going to regret that a lot if you don’t cover and protect the walls and floor. They’re going to ruin that closet fast. Additionally, where is their heat?

I should warn you that keeping birds in the house can really stir up allergies. Chicks also smells pretty bad.

I would probably have laid a piece of the exercise pen over the top of the tub to keep them in.

have a baby gate up so I can leave the door open.

They will probably fly to the top of the baby gate and then come down on the other side, so keep an eye out for wandering chicks.

OP should be able to watch their behavior to tell whether they are comfortable or too cold. Inside of a house might be fine, depending on what temperature the house is.
