Who Lays the Best Eggs: Frequency, size, color. ?

Ancona, California Grey, Fayoumi, White Leghorn, Minorca and Norwegian Jaerhorn all lay close to 300 eggs per year... All are flighty except the California grey.

I have an interesting story. Among my hens I have 6 Red Sex-links. I bought them as chicks in April. They have been laying a large brown egg since late August. I have always kept a light on in my coop and had noticed that early in the morning the large brown eggs were there but I hardly ever saw a sex-link in the nest box. When Sandy came through we lost power for 7 days. All of a sudden I started finding the brown eggs on the floor instead of the nest boxes. It took me a few days to figure out that they had been laying before daylight and with no light they couldn't find the nest boxes. As soon as the lights came back on, no more eggs on the floor.

I love our rsl's as well. They started laying at 20 weeks, and until the shorter days, we were averaging 5 eggs a day...ex large cream to brown and speckled eggs. We just added light yesterday since production had fallen to about 2 eggs/day (we have 6 hens) and I expect to see it pop back up to at least 4/day within the week. They're egg laying machines! Overall, they're nice birds...no broodiness and don't fuss when you remove an egg. They aren't really flighty but aren't friendly like pets either. That works for us since we got them for the eggs :) They're reasonably quiet, although a couple like to announce a new egg rather loudly. Since we're limited to 6 hens only where we live, we actually plan to always have the sexlinks since they do exactly what we want them to do :)

I have Rhode Island Reds, and they lay the best eggs!! They started laying 2 months early and the eggs are brown and fairly large. I have 13 hens and collect 11-13 eggs per day. Love em!!

We had a flock of 75 Black Austrolorps and they were flighty, and with our grandson here, we elected to get a different breed. I will say though the Austrolorps did well in winter and layed nice sized eggs. We went to the Buff Orpingtons and they were a really nice bird. They were quiet, friendly and excellent egg layers. We had them 3 years before they decreased egg numbers. We recently got a flock of 54 Rhode Island Reds. We have had them before and were happy with the number and quality of eggs we got. I bought 2 RIR roosters and plan on hatching out my own eggs.

On Tuesday, I got 4 Australorp teenie tiny baby chicks. They were a bit wobbly, took about
24 hours before they started to perk up. They look good now.

Leghorn is a good breed, but some people say they aren't that close to their owners. I've also heard that Rhode Island Red are good as well, and will sometimes create a double yolk. Golden Comet is said to be a very gentle breed which gets along well in mixed flocks.

I know people don't agree on this.. but, my 15 month old Barred Rock is an amazing girl. Even now, in winter, she's laying every other day like clockwork. Beautiful large eggs. Unlike our Ameracauna who was molting in September and October and hasn't layed an egg since. She is apparently on permanent strike through the winter.
