I just came back to the family farm in South Africa for the first time in years & picked up one of my 15 year old chickens for a cuddle & a sniff. My father raised his eyebrows at me & called me different so I thought I'd start a poll. Who loves the smell of their chickens? I think that they smell so comforting-it's chicken therapy

You are not alone. Yesterday, I terrified one of my hubby's friends who raises game chickens - by picking up one of his best roosters and burying my nose into the base of bird's neck.

"He'll peck your eye out!" warned the man.

Although alarmed at first, the rooster settled quickly, and seemed content in my arms. I carried that rooster around for the entire visit-we use the man's barn to store hay. The husband talked to the man while the rooster and I had a discussion about life. He clucked and bocked with the occasional purr and became so relaxed his wings drooped.

Yes, I like to smell chickens and I talk to them, too!

oH YES! I think the more we love something, the more we crave experiencing it fully. I also have Cockatoos and they have a wonderfully distinct fragrance. My Rose-Breasted Cockatoo smells like caramel corn! TRUE! My silkies have different scents from each other, too. I think I could identify 4 or 5 of them blindfolded, just by scent. Not all of them have that distinct smell but several of them do. Smelling them is a multi-sensory feast. I love feeling the softness against my lips and face when I bury my nose in the back of their neck. Can you tell I love my birds?

Never tried but I'll be sure to today. I know I love the smell of farms, barns and hay and stuff.

Your chickens are 15 years old?

I don't usually smell my chickens' feathers, but I love to smell my cats' soft fluff. Clean animals have a wonderful smell (dirty, wet dog on the other hand...
