I have some bobwhite quail, and almost every single adult so far went broody. Even the ones I got at sales. each pair has a 8'x 20' aviary, made really natural. they make their own nests, sit on them, hatch them, and take care of them. This year all three out of three adults went broody, last year two out of two. Even my one white one!

I also hatched some in the bator, and all together I have about 35 quail now. Whoever said they don't go broody if given a chance, are proved wrong. I also highly recommend giving quail a natural aviary, so they can actually enjoy life and raise their own chicks.

They are so cute! I love the brown one, looks at least twice the size of a normal bobwhite ^^ Do post baby pics as well!
People say the same about buttons, but I agree with you - I really think it comes down to how you keep them. My buttons go broody all the time and I'm not the only one on this forum.
Now we just need get the coturnix to go broody regularly.. I haven't tried those, but I do intend to in the future. It does seem that even in a natural environment few cots will go broody - but the ones that do tend to do it again and again.

they're both males. the brown one's girl is sitting on eggs as well, but since the male had to look after the chicks, he didn't mate and they're all infertile. That really sucks. I hate to take them away because then she thinks I'm one mean creature that steals her eggs. she attacks me when I come close.

I hope to be getting some coturnix in the next year or so, and I plan to try to create a line that goes broody and hatches out eggs. I have some ideas on how to do it, but as of yet they are unproven.

Good for you! I know people who raise them to train bird dogs. Poor birds don't have the best of lives then get let into the wild to try and send for themselves. I like to think there is a whole wild colony in the woods.
It's so nice of you to provide them with the most natural setting possible. In my opinion that's why you had such happy birds that they wanted to raise young. :clap
