Who should fix it, your opinion

Thank you all for your opinion.

No they haven't done any major renovations. The only thing they have done is paint the walls to colors of their choosing.

While they haven't come out and out right ask us to pay for it they have been strongly hinting. I have received four phone calls in the last two hours about it. I'm not a plumber, neither is DH who is in Kentucky at the moment.

Yeah, I agree with the others. I rented a house from my father years ago, and the deal was I paid half the going rent for it, and in return, I did all the repairs and upkeep. And that was paying half the rent and my own father. FREE? Definitely them! Just tell them, "Hey, sorry I can't help. If I was collecting rent I could afford to fix it, but since you're living there for free, you guys will have to find someone to fix it yourselves".

Relative needs to pay. All those months of not paying rent they should have some money. They should have A LOT OF MONEY.What would you have gotten for rent since they have lived there? I would point out that loss of income. Shoot, you should even have to point it out.

If they did not pay it I would fix it,and then tell them in writing to move out in 60 days so I can rehab the house. Once rehabed I would rent it out for cash and NEVER to a relative. Years of being used have led me to being *harsh* with those that TRY to take advantage of me now.

If they don't have the knowhow or the funds for whatever reason, I would fix it myself instead of squabbling. At the least, I'd expect them to pay half, ideally all, but we all know ideal doesn't ever happen. I'd be more interested in getting it fixed than who does it.

But that's me

Tell them if you have to start making repairs ,you will need to charge RENT to pay for the up keep...that should give them a idea who should .

I think in all situations like this, a contract should have been drawn up, specifically detailing everyone's responsibilities. Even though a broken pipe is usually very easy and inexpensive to fix, they should take care of it.

I agree that they should fix the pipe, however, even if they were paying rent, it depends on what rental agreement they signed. We have a house we rent out, and the signed rental agreement states that the renters are responsible for ALL upkeep and repairs of the property. This was included in the agreement because of the very low rent they pay-------if they want us to be responsible for upkeep and repairs, the rent goes up.

Totally agree--no rent...no fixing from you! They should feel lucky to have a place to live for almost nothing! Let them keep hinting and then they'll get the hint when you don't "catch on"! good luck
