Who would have known?!! LOL

I currently have 10 hens at laying age. The first 15 cost me $150, that included the coop and run. I did lose one of those. I then bought 5 more that were just starting to lay for $34 and 2 collards, I like trading things if I can. My feed cost $12 for a fifty pound bad of laying crumbles or scratch and I have customers that buy all the extra eggs I can spare so my chickens are pretty much paying for themselves right now.
correction, I meant to say 19 hens at laying age.

Get Meat Birds this summer!? Sounds like you already have 36 meat birds and 4 Layers.

Sorry...I couldn't resist.

I'm impressed with your ambitions...good luck to you in your endeavors.

Let us know how those Meat Birds go this summer.

LOL, i actually live 2 hours away form NYC, and my dad works their, So once a week I go to the city with him, and people their are willing to pay 5-6 $ a dozen xD LOL ridiculus, but I am not complaining lol.... First I have to convince my dad to let me get meat birds.... He says he wont be able to eat it though.... xD THANKS DISNEY!

My husband says it cost us 50g to get into chickens. We drove to a town we never go to and bought a piece of farm equiptment. :lau

The 15 chicks we went to get turned into 60 before we even left the store.

I love the pics of your birds. :love

I am scared to look at the cost of the chickens and things they need. I know one year I had cost way over $1000 but things haven't been that bad...since we got over learning curve and trained pup to leave them alone. I got to thinking of how much this year we have spent...OMG I was shocked at about $350 so far and still have another batch coming. I have to admit we have bought about 60 chicks at this point with no losses :) . My biggest complaint is the waterers are not built like they use to be...the old one we have has been around way too many years and still going....the new ones bend if the wind blows just right it seems. I have to replace the new ones every year or so instead of the 20+ year life. I also try to keep things in stockpile so if something happens I can replace it immediately....then my son says mom I got such and such my chickens needed it LOL. But I have to agree we raise chickens cause we enjoy them so much..the colors, personalities, and antics are worth every dime. DH is just as guilty as I am seems if he sees brooder empty we have to get more LOL not sure who is more addicted...grandson (20 mo old), DH or me...but they are enjoyed here. I have even noticed if your depressed or just having a bad day you can't with them...they are always doing something and you have to smile :)

I am 16, And I put all of my money into my farm... have 40 chickens ATM, only 4 of them are laying lol.. so that is alot of feed, with no return..... allwelll... Glad I already have a job at a farm.... I hope to get meat birds this summer, as well as a few turkeys maybe.... If only I could talk my dad into 3 or 4 cows XD

I think this is great. I love what you are doing. Before you get meat birds figure out how you will butcher them and the cost of feed. Before you get those cows make sure you have a source of feed and a place to butcher.

We are new to chickens. Really new--we got them last Thursday! lol We love them already. We haven't spent that much so far. Trying to plan out the coop/run and I am watching the numbers add up fast. We, like many others, didn't give the cost a second thought before getting these little cuties. We only have 3 (for now

) and have had a lot of stuff given to us, so I am hoping that our grand total won't be so grand. lol My son's 1st grade class hatched these eggs and it has been worth any cost just to watch the excitement he has for them.

My neighbor has a farm, and has 100 chickens, meat birds, cows, and pigs.... So he has taught me how to do it all..... I plan on building a butchering station for the chickens... We would get dairy cows... not meat...

I highly recommend that you get a couple of turkey. you have to keep them separate from the chickens but they are great if you have the space.
I had two baby turkeys "Thanks" and "Chris" (Thanksgiving and Christmas) but one of them wandered out in the street and got hit by a car yesterday. I tried to keep them penned up but they cried so much to get out and they were having such a good time I let them stay out all day. They are still small enough to squeeze through the fencing I have.
This is a real tragedy for me so I am going to make sure I have plenty of 1" poultry wire next time I get turkey so I can make them a bigger pen until they are big enough to be contained by chain link.
I saw them at the feed store and just HAD to have them so I brought them home. I kept them in the garage under the workshop desk with a screen nailed to the opening.
I never raised turkey before and I just love these friendly and amusing birds. They follow me everywhere I go and when I come in the house they stand outside the door and cry. So cute! They like to be picked up more than my chicks do. They aren't too smart but they are just adorable and fearless.
We were walking out in the pasture and the turkeys trying to keep up on those short scrawny legs. When we crossed the creek the turkeys could not find the bridge and both of them fell in the creek. They were just floating there when I went looking for them. I had to bring them back to the garage and put them under the heat lamp, they don't even have feathers yet.
Thanks is heartbroken this morning after spending a night without Chris, and he appears lost and sad today. I know it all my fault and I feel bad.
I promise to be a better turkey momma in the future. So if you do get turkeys you are in for a real treat.
