I have just come home from work to find my whole flock dead :( I am absolutely devastated.. My dogs broke in to my coop, which had just been reinforced with new gate & hinges :( I feel soo bad for my chooks. I only just bought them not even a week ago :( sitting here crying and totally shattered... I don't understand as I've had chooks for the last 5 years with the dogs. Does any one know why they would take a sudden interest in getting into the coop???????

I am so sorry for your losses.

It is hard losing chickens. Idk why the suddenly had an interest. Were they smaller and younger chickens? Some dogs will only attack smaller hens and roosters.
Sorry to hear u lost your flock.

Thank you :(
Yes these were all bantams :( I've only ever had large breeds before. I put 2 flighty Belguims in only yesterday so I'm thinking this was the excitement for my dogs..
I still can't believe this has happened :(

The dogs may have been protecting your flock from what they saw as a threat - intruders (strangers, new chickens) in the coop. So sorry.

So sad for you. I hope you can find a way to secure the dogs.I keep mine inside or in a crate. My pup and min pin would kill the chickens.Hope you can get more chicks soon.

Thank you... I'm truly in shock. I will be reconstructing my coop before I get any more hens. I love my chooks and can't imagine not having any. My oldest dig (13yrs) has never shown any interest in my chooks. I got a puppy ( English Staffy) 16 months ago. Both beautiful dogs and both never worried about the chickens. But BOTH very guilty today :(
I'm thinking it was the Belguims that made it exciting for them as they were very flighty and NOISEY. I only got them yesterday and the week old flock were putting them in their place constantly. So lots of squeaking and fluttering going on. And of course no one home :( I'm guessing this is what happened :( but in saying this my dogs busted 2 hinges off the door to get in :( that wasn't weak. I'm thinking of a totally new set up now- maybe even a pool fence across my yard to keep dogs AWAY from coop.
Thank you
