Who's Going to the TN Valley Fair Sept 5-14?

Are they show quality GLW?
And they're standard size, right? I'm at capacity for standards. Actually, I'm over capacity on everything is you listen to my other half....

They are hatchery chicks from Ideal.. SQ is luck of the draw I understand with hatchery chicks, and yes.. they are standards.

5 Std. GLW "Pullets" from Ideal.. currently 3 weeks old

talk of OVER capacity... I have 47 chickens already and 2 turkeys! it all started with an order of 8 pullets from MPC back in May

Bummer. Just can't do any more standards.

I got my original 4 chicks from MyPetChicken in 2007 and 3 of them are as pretty as any I saw at the fair (when they aren't molting). 2 buff orps and an Ameracauna (EE to the picky people). So I don't discount hatchery chicks!

We live in a subdivision, so someone would shoot me if I had 47 chickens. I tried to hatch turkeys but they quit on me. I've threatened to hatch an emu....

Okay, at least I'm not alone in the whole chicken over-population thing. Not now but when/if the incubator works out and my chick order comes in.

If the bator thing fails the first time, I'll have average numbers. 14 eggs, 25 chicks, 4 started cochins and any white rocks I pick up and oopppss.

Admittedly 12 of 14 eggs are dark cornish and for meat comparisons but... 2 are turkey eggs, yay. 10 of the chicks will be black broilers, also meaties.
But they do have to live somewhere.

I'll have 15 rocks to sort, four permanent cochins, and probably three white rock pullets for improvement, until they replace themselves.

And I want to bring in dorking eggs. Soon. Where are those hay bale coop notes? LOL.

Oh yeah.. your not alone... you have good company!

Problem with my crew is half or more than half are roosters because I hatched so many

So.. This week I have to dispatch 4 of my extra buff roosters, even though they are beautiful & friendly, to make room for at least 7 roosters (6 wks old) coming out of the hen house. A week later I'll have to integrate a 2nd group of 4 week olds with these that are 2 weeks older, seperating roos from hens if at all possible.. I might wait & do it all at once so that the new roos are integrated at the same moment as the housing changes for the older ones. 2 weeks difference & hopefully they'll make it work.

Anywho.. haven't mentionoed yet the brooder full of 15 more, some hatched, some hatchery, yadda yadda... always more always more. Plus the turkeys too who are now in a bird cage in the bedroom and will live on our back porch all winter.

Need to get down to no MORE than 25 hens & 5 roosters, as always less is more

Isn't this an entire FORUM dedicated to those of us eager to be over capacity in the chicken zone?

Or did you just mean in East TN?

I loooooooove the GLW pattern, but I've pretty much decided that I don't want to deal with the wyandotte personality. I've heard too many things about their aggression and general bossiness.

Tell me where the bantam show is. I *think* I'm doing something on Nov. 8, but you never know!

hmmm... I got them because of their docile nature... they seem sweet as pie to me, maybe even more so than my buffs in the brooder with them... well.. at least these have been personality tested! LOL

I THINK the show is at the Cocke County Fairgrounds... I-40E to exit 432B, down on the right a couple of miles.. pretty simple

I called the contact # for the show Nov 8. Had to leave a message. I'll let ya'll know what I learn....

You know, I think breed personality varies a lot more than people realize. I had heard such nice things about Welsummers, and my Welsummer roo (Rusty) is a bashful sweetie. But the pullets are MEAN! They don't just peck the bantams when they see them, they hunt them down and run them ragged. DH wants me to rehome the wellie girls (Thelma & Louise) but I keep telling him no. I'm praying they will grow out of it!!

The man at the TVA fair said he's seen more chickens with names this year than he ever had before. I think that's funny. Chickens as pets are taking over!!

Oh, speaking of Wellies -- did y'all see the "Welsummer" pullet at the fair that had the beard and ear muffs? I kinda wanted to buy her just to see what her eggs look like!
