I’m glad this thread exists. I was getting so freaked out when a couple of my spring chickens (born March 23) started molting. I wrongly assumed that would never happen and I’d see a molt occur the following autumn.
After checking for and ruling out parasites, injuries, feather eating, and other stressors, I’ve chalked it up to a molt.
Fortunately my part of Montana is having a VERY abnormal mild winter. Highs in the 40s to 50s and lows in the 20s. October was another story... we got down to negatives and maybe the stress of temps swinging from high 60s to negatives overnight so early in the fall threw some of the girls for a loop.
I’m feeding them Nutrena Feather Fixer right now. It may be all hogwash but I feel a little better and the chickens enjoy eating it.
