I adore donkeys - had horses growing up, never had a donkey til we moved down here to the farm - I would rather have donkeys than horses

Donkeys and mules are pretty big down here, seems like most everyone has one or the other.

Very cool - glad someone is having more luck than I am

I stopped in at the feedstore, and they had four baby pekins left in the bin - I managed to get out without buying anything.

But - I have to go back monday for feed (didn't trust myself to stand there without hubby to say No for very long

)

oh, btw - off topic, but funny - my gander Benny attacked the dog today. Dog was minding his own business - but he is a bit too full of himself anyway, so Benny comes over and blind sides him - backed off right away, just let Toby know he was too clsoe to Benny's food supply

Shoulda' seen the look on that dog's face.

The duckling that hatched yesterday "aint right". I think one of it's eye is messed up. I looks like there is no eye in the socket, just crust. The head is a little misshaped, and it hasn't uncurled it's feet yet. It doesn't appear to be in pain or anything, so I will just let it be for now. :sigh:

The other duck is still working on getting out of the shell. It should be out by tonight.

Little duckie is up on her feet (sort of) this morning doing the "Squishy Scoot" and by tonight should be running around like a wind up toy.

I tried to get pics, but she wouldn't hold still enough for me to do it myself (was afraid she'd jump off the table) I'll get help later and get a pic of her. All the ones I took turned out blurry cause I was too close.

btw - compared to Squishy (who is, I think, 2 weeks old, now - would have to look at dates) she is tiny! I know he was that small, too, but he is a lot bigger now. I'll get updated pics of Squishy, too. Maybe I can get a pic of them side by side for comparison.

Would be cool if both were girls - cause I have a drake already, I need girl ducks bad!!

I did end up putting a drop of Blukote on her belly button last night - it looked so red and a little swollen - it isn't swollen at all this morning, and isn't red either

I did wait, though, until it was nearly closed up before doing so - I didn't want to drip it inside of her.
Maybe the last little one died from infection there? I imagine laying around on an exposed area like that not only irritates it, but exposes it to everything on the bator floor and all the ick that comes out of the eggs when they hatch.

No action on the other eggs yet - I gotta stop getting my duckies one at a time (but I'll take the one at a time, not complaining too badly, here

)

I'm so happy she's ok

Sorry about your baby - the one I had that died had a mis-shapen head, too - sort of lop sided - eyes were ok, just looked "off center".
I wonder if they have soft skulls like human babies do when they're born. (?)

Good news! The first hatchling appears to have some kind of gunk stuck in its eyes, but the eyes are there and in tact. The second one is out and also has crusty eyes. We took a swab and have been dabbing the gunk. It isn't all out yet, but between that and keeping the humidity up in the room with the brooder, the eyes should be clear by tomorrow...we hope.

The feet are slowly uncurling. By tomorrow hopefully those will be better too. As for the goofy shaped head, it appears to be more normal.

So out of 4 fertile eggs, we have 2 hatches. The old one, despite its impaired vision, has already found the water dish and is drinking. It has also poo'd a few times too. Internal plumbing appears to be ok.

I will post photos. Maybe someone can help me figure out if these are khaki/runners or khaki/buffs. Their coloring is half way between khaki newborn and yellow. There is some faint patterning around the eye. Makes me suspect buff...at least on one.

I just put my first batch of duck eggs in the 'bator today. . .I am soooooooo nervous!
Can't wait to see pictures of everyone's hatches to ease my wait. . .
