Who's right? Me or Hubby???

I agree-there has to be a gift from the parents-all though shell be getting 18 seperate presents from her friends give her a gift-it does not have to be expensive-that she thinks of often-let me tell you my DD just turned 14 and the cost of gifts only gets more-she got an ipod touch-and 4 friends over night for a party-no themes-just dvds we had and pizza/ice cream cake. If you are completely broke-next time cut the friends in half and spend the money on her alone-thats what weve done...

A mud and stick pinata! I love it! I am actually building a deathstar pinata right now. Mud and sticks would be way more entertaining than candy. I can picture it. The kids bash it open and then rush in and realize it's mud and sticks. Then everyone starts crying! Awesome!

My opinion...either way, you're eventually going to be buying a gift she can open.

The only question is, do you buy it now so that she'll be able to open it at her party and have it be a really great day, or do you buy it after the party and her birthday are ruined by her not understanding that the party was the gift and after you've effectively wasted $60 and a lot of time and effort trying to salvage some entertainment and fun for 18 children to which you did NOT give birth, while you watch your own daughter cry miserably in a corner because she feels totally ripped off.

But, again...that's just an opinion.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. We will be buying a gift.

I probably sound like a complete tool. (In my defense I never had a birthday party or birthday gifts growing up, so my views are a bit skewed.)

Kids at that age don't appreciate the party as much as they do the gift. Trust me, they'll have a ball (Heck, I'm in my 30's, can I come?) but not getting a gift for her to open will be a big downer..... I do parties for the big birthdays.. and I break budget to do so.

Let me just say that about 30 years ago I was that little 6 year old girl who loved Star Wars and got shafted because my birthday was 2 weeks before Christmas. I STILL to this day remember people giving me a gift and saying "here, here's your birthday AND Christmas gift". I hated it because it wasn't MY fault my birthday was 2 weeks before Christmas and some people were too cheap to buy 2 gifts. Get the kid a gift, they're only little once and then they're gone.

you poor thing-I never had a party either-but always a gift or two always! Now I make sure my kids get 1 good gift. My DD's bdays are 3 days apart and 1 month before xmas-it doesnt matter they get gifts as if xmas was 6 months away.

I made a huge heart-shaped pinata filled with dried pinto beans. You wanna see 18 disappointed kids, try that. You'll remember it forever.

Hen House Rocks when Boyd throws your party I'll be there too.....My mom was a cleanaholic and never wanted to have a party with kids at her house cause it would be too messy so my sis and I had no birthday parties and only clean and quiet friends ....one at a time...

I didn't like it growing it but I understand that she had special needs......So the whole concept of parties for kids is a bit foreign for me....I threw quite a few for the youngun because I wanted her to remember parties.....

Not trying to hijack this thread but I remember when the little one was only 6 and going to a swimming party to warn her to stay to the shallow end and get a buddy. Called the parents and told her they needed to keep an eye out and they said no worry....Got there and laughed my head off....There was a sprinkler to run through and a canoe withabout 4 inches of water in it that the kids jumped in and out and pretend rowed!!!!

They had a great time, btw...

Enjoy the party....
