So! Hubby and I went shopping last night and bought her a pair of "dangly earrings." She got her ears pierced back in October and has been wanting "dangly earrings." I told her she had to wait awhile for her ears to heal real well, so this will be a nice surprise for her. You all were right. She will love the gift even though it only cost $11. And we will give it to her at home on the morning of her birthday. Along with waffles for breakfast... her favorite and something I don't make often.
I DO want her birthday to be special. I just thought that the MEMORY of the party would mean more to her than another toy. The toy she would play with for a while and forget. The memory of the party and playing all the cool games with her friends will hopefully be something to think about and treasure always.
BTW my husband threw me a 30th b-day party (my first birthday party) this summer and invited EVERYONE we knew. He rented a huge bounce house for all the kids (and grown-up kids) and bought a couple kegs. I had such a good time. It was worth the 30 year wait!!!
the earrings sound adorable
I believe firmly that it depends a great deal on the child, even at 6 or younger some children are very capable of understanding and loving the idea of "the party is your gift" concept and they absolutely can have a great memory of having "just" a party with all their friends
We have done different things for each kid every year (big party, little party, special breakfast, lunch, dinner, lots of gifts, one gift, *gasp* joint party for all three kids at the same time, special trip) you name it we've done it. We even rented out a skating rink one year and collected gifts for our local childrens' home instead gifts for the kids. The one thing I do every year is let them decide what kind of cake or cupcakes they want for home and school doesn't matter what the theme is I will make something to match.
Do what works best for your family and budget! You're a great parent no matter which way you do it because whatever you do will be done out of love! $60 dollars for a party of 18 kids is awesome - I need some of your money saving ideas!
