Who's setting with me Sept 1st-4th?

Have any of you thought of participating in the Hatching Eggs/PayPal Swap Chain thread? There are some VERY nice breeds (eggs) being traded there. Basically, all it costs you is either the shipping fee of the eggs you are sending as a trade or you can just trade a $15 PayPal payment. Right now there are some really nice looking Japanese Bantam eggs and Serama Eggs offered. I am tempted to take them, but it would mean building another pen, lol. I already have a lot of pen building to do this fall making room for Silkies. If you haven't checked it out, you should. Beats $40 and $45 dollars.....

I candled my eggs today (day 8) 4 have obvious veins in them. Several glow pink, then 2 look like the day I first put them in still.
Sadly one that has veins looks like it might have the start of a blood ring in the top. I hope it's not a blood ring, but fear it might be. I'm excited to see if even a few hatch. I paid $5 a dozen for 2 dozen eggs. They were refrigerated so not expecting more then half to make it. But hoping that more then just 4 hatch out of 2 dozen.

They should hatch as long as they weren't in there for too long. From what I read and how I understand it, the only problem with storing eggs in the fridge is that the humidity is to low and the air sacs develope too much. I imagine that could be fixed by playing with the humidity, I have hatched eggs from a fridge with positive results. I asked a friend for a dozen hatching eggs and she said sure, but she didn't realize that they shouldn't be stored in a fridge while collecting, but they hatched any ways.

I now have had 5 blood rings.:/. Only 3 are viable and I spent quite a bit more then $5.

How's everyone's progress? I'm a little afraid to candle the 3 that are doing well. I've been making sure the temp and humidity are stable. I'll need to add more water today. This is going to be a long 13 days left to go. I'm extremely nervous with this 3 and making it to the end.

The seller wrote back and admitted he was at fault. I was offered another dozen, but I needed to pay shipping costs which are not cheap with him. I'll probably pass and call this a loss and learning experience.

My next two batches will be directly from the breeders club. I'll get nicer looking chicks to show and the hatch rate should be higher.

I tried to candle last night, it was the beginning of day 4. The only 3 I saw good developement in were the 3 I collected and put in as a control. I figured if the eggs don't work out at all then I should complain, but a seller can simply say that your incubator could have been acting up, which is true, so thats why I put 3 of my own in just to prove that the incubator is fine. Of course I won't take any out until day 7, but I'm pretty bummed right now...

I saw the start of quite a few blood rings, maybe they do have to do something with shipping. I hope that you can get your remaining 3 to hatch.

This was my first time dealing with shipped eggs and I don't believe I will ever buy shipped eggs again.

What's the breeders club? Do you believe shipping goes more smoothly with them? I feel mine were packaged pretty well, but they still came in horrible shape. I really want some quality silver laced cochins for showing and stuff, but I can't find anything like that around here...

The egg carton the eggs were sent in was full of filth. Dirt, cobwebs and dead bugs. I never seen anything like that before.

Even I bought brand new cartons from eggcartons.com for my own eating egg use and to pass free eggs to friends and family. I had 5 blood rings in all, the other 4 were infertile and the 3 viable I'm afraid to check. I want so badly for them to hatch.

My first shipped eggs I hatched 5/6. Unfortunately they were mixed breeds and I was scammed there. I was refunded fully and thought I'd try one more time. I even paid double and look what happened.:/. I'm glad I'm not out hundreds of dollars trying. I will go straight to the breeders list though. I have 9 beautiful chicks that are 2 weeks old in the brooder and the eggs were local. Out of luck, I hatched 1 rooster of this bunch in my brooder. I gave the mixed breed chicks to a friend 3 days after they hatched.

I was hoping to save a little money by buying online. Big mistake. We are showing in 4-H to start and the birds do not need to be perfect.

I've hatched refrigerated eggs before. I had 3 dozen of them from a friend that tossed them in the refrigerator for more then a week before giving them to me. 28 hatched. sadly most were roosters :(
Out of these they are from "the egg lady" a co-op sells them. If I go this route again I'll call the egg lady and see about getting them directly from her at her house. I know where she lives, I drive past there every time I go see my mom. Pretty sure if I get them straight from her they'll only be $3 a dozen. so even cheaper then what I paid, more likely that I can get her to get me the freshest ones, or the ones more likely to be fertile.

Usually I wont check eggs til day 10 so I've already checked them early. I'm hoping more progress. I don't plan to remove any of them til day 18 unless they begin to smell. Or if they are just very obvious they aren't going to hatch I'll remove and feed to my dogs.
