ok all you silkie fans .... not to hurt your feelings but could someone explain to me why silkies? is there anything special about these birds? i'm not a real big fan ot them but admit to not knowing about all their characteristics.....could someone help?

Congrats on everyone seeing development! What wonderful news!
Don, good luck with your second hatch. I actually had a staggered hatch last time that was 5 days apart in the same incubator that was very successful! I did take the chicks out immediately after they hatched and dried them off and put them in the brooder under the light on top of paper towels.

I have some silkie mix's. It's my first time with the breed, Before I said no they just lay tiny eggs. I was given the eggs free and hatched them. These are like feathery puppies. They come running when they see me, They love to be held and cuddled. Far friendlier then most chicken breeds I've dealt with. I gave several to my nephew that is almost 2 years old now. He picks up and holds them.
I wouldn't consider them a chicken for someone that wants eggs, but they are great for getting rid of bugs and keeping as a pet.

My husband wants silkies. The small eggs don't bother us too much. We have a bantam d'uccle and we use her eggs all the time. She's a very strong layer too. I have my heart set on Ameraucana's though.

I would LOVE to have some silkies! i just love their look and how little they are! little eggs wouldn't bother us either, we have guineas and their eggs are so yummy (they make for excellent boiled eggs, they peel so much easier than the chicken/duck eggs)! If I can find eggs locally I'd like to hatch some silkies one day!

Anyways I candled the brown eggs again today and ended up seeing veins in all but one of the eggs (a dark brown so it's difficult to see through too well, but the yolk is dark and it doesn't smell! so fingers crossed he/she is growing too!), even my double yolker is doing something! I'm praying my double yolk survives all the way through, how cool would it be to have twins! If that happens I think I would let my twin nephews (who will be 4 in 2 months) name them. But I'm getting ahead of myself there lol we'll just take it one step at a time

Reading this makes me wish my hens would go lay a double yolker today, hehehe. Odds are they aren't identical, but it would still be so neat to be able to say that those 2 chickens over there are twins. Watch the link below, it's someone hatching a double yolker, it's the only sucessful one that I know of, but I'm sure there are a few others out there.

I candled today. I have 4 blood ring, 1 quitter and 4 infertile eggs. I'm a bit ticked off and I contacted the seller. I doubt I'll get any money back. I only have 3 viable eggs from 12.

Oh, no! So sorry to hear that. I know just how you must be feeling, because I think 7 of my 17 may not even be fertile, either. For $45 dollars, I could understand maybe one or two being infertile, but dang, money is hard to come by, and is so disheartening! I hope you get somewhere with the seller, but like you, I doubt it. Good luck with the ones you still have going.

These were not cheap eggs either. I will buy strictly from the breeders list from now on. It will be much cheaper going that route then to be scammed online. So frustrating. This is not my fault either. I only had the eggs in since the 1st of September.

I hope the three I have actually hatch.

I'll wait another 3 days until I candle, but I think I might complain to the seller as well. It was $40 for a dozen and 8 of them are basically "unhatchable" because of their ruptured air sacs, the remaining 4 aren't so perfect either. I'm also worried about what they were exposed at the postal office during labor day weekend, they may not develope at all. Thats really disappointing, I hope you get your money back. Eggs with 75% fertility is pretty low.

I hope you get your money back from your seller as well if they don't hatch.

I will be happy to take 1/2 refund for those 3 good eggs. I'll let you know if I hear back from the seller. I've never had blood rings in a hatch before. They appeared in the first 3 days.
