Who's setting with me Sept 1st-4th?

candled and my eggs are doing awesome from what I can tell! Even the 2 babies in the double yolk are doing awesome! I just wish I had a stronger light so I could see more... But at least I can see that there are veins and they all look good :)

Do the double yolkers hatch? Wont 1 or both die?

Well, I candled my Silkie eggs a few minutes ago.....

Out of the 7 from the white pen she sent I have 1 still going.....had 2 quitters and 4 that never even developed. (I'm inclined to think maybe some issues in that pen...but that's just my thinking)

Out of the 1 from the B/B/S pen, O. It quit. (Btw, this was the pen I was hoping for more eggs from. I wish I would have specified that now, but didn't want to be pushy, figured I would get at least 3 or 4.)

Out of the 3 from the B/B/S/possibly partridge pen, 2 are still going. ( I am hoping and praying that if these make it, I end up with good strong coloring, not a bunch of leakage)

Out of the 2 from the black pen she sent BOTH still going

Out of the 4 from the buff pen she sent, they are ALL still going.

So, I now have 9 of the eggs going strong. Wish is better than none. Hopefully it will be worth the $45 I paid for 17 eggs in the long run. These are supposed to be from show quality lines. We will see, I guess. Y'all plz keep your fingers crossed for me. I have been trying to hatch out good quality Silkies going on the 3rd year now. I sure could use some good luck about now. I DO know one thing: IF I am able to build up a flock of SQ Silkies I will not try and get rich from egg sales. I will ship eggs for $10/dozen plus shipping. That's only around $25. Enough to cover the S&H and a few bucks for my efforts. Do y'all think that is too much? I would just like to make it to where us average people could afford to have some of these beautiful birds. It's not like anyone gets rich from showing, so why go into such debt over it?

In our state and many others, it's the law to have them NPIP certified to sell hatching eggs. I don't sell any myself, but I just researched since I want to show a couple of my new chicks. In Virginia, you have to prove your certification. I don't know if that's outgoing and/or incoming eggs and chicks. You might want to read up on it. As far as price, that totally depends on the rarity and quality of your birds. I've paid much more then that for Ameraucana's and I have had horrible luck with sellers. I will buy directly from the breeders list from now on. I do know there are good honest sellers out there somewhere online. It sounds fair to me, but I really don't know what the going price is. I just hatched a few chicks from a well known breeder. Over 70% had some disqualification already known within the first week. I'm not quite sure how normal that is or if I just bought from a bad breeder. I have maybe 1-3 I can show from one bunch. I'm so new to this that I really don't know. I hope you get much better results then I do. We need some more good news in this thread. I'd really like to know how well your chicks turned out. I'm very curious since I'm having such a difficult time. Good luck and I can't wait to find out!

So how do you go about getting NPIP certified, what do they do exactly? I would like to sell eggs once I finally get these Silver Laced Cochins Bantams. I emailed the seller today as an update of how the eggs are doing. I told her my situation, so I'll see if she offers more eggs or anything. I really hope she does, what are the chances of both of them hatching and one being male while the other is female.

In our state we need to apply for a flock owners permit through the state. It's through our states BAH poultry testing laboratories. It's basically a free permit stating what we are doing with our poultry and to make sure we are following the guidelines. We need to verify what our intentions are for the test. They want to know if we are using the poultry for show, breeding and chick/fertile egg sales. They keep track of how many poultry we are keeping and how many incubators/hatchers we own.

Once we have that permit from the state, then we can have our birds NPIP tested. I was given a list of phone numbers to get quotes of the test itself. Before I can actually test, I need to send the form supplied for the flock owners permit. Your suppose to renew yearly, so I'll fill one out next year when I have my show birds set.

Right now I'm hatching eggs from other breeders. If I ever sell eggs, I'll do the NPIP testing. I do not want my eggs compensated from the post office with an unhappy customer. I'd be out the shipping too. I need it done for showing anyways.

When I was researching, the state of Virginia is strict about hatching eggs and chicks coming and going.

The seller replied to my email, she offered to give me another 12+ eggs for the price of shipping which is $15. I will definately be taking her up on this, and I'm glad she offered. I was really disappointed. And Don, Guck Luck with your hatch!

Speckled sussexes sure are pretty!

So glad to hear your's are hatching Don!! I love the SS! Hoping they all hatch out for you.

And Cochins----That's great the seller is sending you another dozen for just the shipping, I'd have taken them up on that, too! Sounds like a great deal. Good luck with the next hatch. Gonna have to keep us up-to-date with it, ok?

As for myself, I have 2 of the EE/OE peeping that I put in lockdown yesterday. My friend is ecstatic, these eggs are the first to hatch from his flock.

My EEs and brown layers will go into lock down next week. Looking good so far.

Of course, I'm not touching the bator with the 9 remaining Silkies, gonna let them ride til lockdown. Hoping that will increase the hatch-rate. Really wanting all 9 of them to hatch......

Good luck everyone, I will check back in sometime next week...

My eggs are on Day 13. I'm a 'Set it and Forget it' kind of guy. I don't candle my eggs until Day 18 when I transfer them to the hatcher.

Good luck to everyone and Congrats to those with eggs hatching already!!
