Why ACV in water??--Okay for chicks??

Regarding regular vs. Braggs ACV - I don't know how you would tell the difference on your chickens.

I have been using ACV for me - for 2 recent bouts with food poisoning or similar. In the first instance, I got sour burps and the runs, then remembered ACV from all these chicken posts and decided to try some Braggs for me. I recovered with no vomiting, and was only slightly off the next day. In the second instance, I was traveling, and did not have Braggs ACV with me. I started feeling sick and got the runs. At about the same time in "the progression" I took standard ACV from a regular grocery store (store brand). I made it the additional 1.5 hrs home, but was still ill along the way. Once home, I vomited once before I got some Braggs ACV into me. Then I recovered - no more vomiting - but was still pretty ill the next day - drowsy and in bed all day.

To me, the difference between the Braggs and the store brand was pretty significant. I felt like I took each at about the same stage in the illness. I thought Braggs was a miracle, whereas the store ACV didn't seem like it really helped much at all.

My 2c from personal experience. YMMV.

PS. I will use up that store ACV on my chickens just for the heck of it, as I have no need for it. But if any of my chickens get sick, they're getting the good stuff.

For those who, like me, don't remember the conversions, 4 TBL is 1/4 cup (2 oz). I just went and checked

Really? Wow!

Yep. Worked with my market rabbits and with my recent broody hatch. Read an article from a sheep farmer who started using it and received 85% females that year and all the years since using it. Also had more mulitiple births. I've also heard of horse breeders doing this.

My eggs are larger when I'm using it also....don't know why, but they are.

Does anyone know if it is okay to go ahead and use ACV in water for chicks? I have 4 chicks that will be two weeks old tomorrow. The waterer I have in the brooder area keeps getting yucky smelling, so I thought adding the ACV may help that. However, I'm not sure that will be good for chicks that young--any more input on this...??

You can use it for chicks. I add ACV to chicks' water from Day 1. (For the first couple days they also get a bit sugar added.)

Ratio is the same for chicks.

It's good for them. Helps them to develop a better gut flora....and the other benefits are the same as well.

Actually, it helps with the absorbation of the calcium in their diet....I think in my opinion, that it adds it's own slime to the waterers, and washing and cleaning waters is just as important and not reduced in any way shape or form with acv....go ahead and use it. I do, but you be the judge as to it's pro's and con's....

It would not be in my feeding program with a flock less than a year old...in my opinion.

Thanks for the input. I wash out the waterer every day, but even that often was not helping. I'm wondering if it is just the medicated chick feed that is making it smell funny....?? I've added the ACV water, so I guess we'll see if that makes any difference.
