Why All The "Junk"?

That is the fact that makes it sensible. Warren buffet might have a cool looking coop, but my chickens (and yours I am sure) are happier. I really think the original poster was looking for a fight. Even if I were building a house today I would TRY to se things that did not tax the environment, my pocketbook or my honor. OK... I have said enough....

LOL see and I think it was just a question. I've read his other posts and i thinj he was just asking how we come up with things.

OK.......example. You're in a 3rd world country. Materials would probably be what you can come up with and may be made the same way with the same things others are able to come up with. That's more or less traditional. So what is used and what does that traditional coop consist of and why did you do it that way.

IDK, I just like seeing other people's questions and ideas and what other's think of them, but without any drama. It's a learning experience. Also I've had posts misunderstood, so I feel for anyone who has my problem and words things to they don't quit compute.

BTW if you look at his page, him and his wife are building and rebuilding their coops.

Maybe he's looking for reasons to tell someone else. Thing is I've reread the OP and at first it can sound off, but when I read it now it doesn't.

You make a good point. I have a recycled kids treehouse for a coop. I will not deny I stare at new coops all the time and scheme how I'll save up for it, or how I'm going to get it in the yard without DH seeing it.

He's a residential contractor and hates to let me come to the job site for fear I'll be seen dumpster-diving for materials for my "new" coop. Regarding Uncle Marc's comments, he opened up a very interesting commentary and he's entitled to offer his views. That's what BYC is for. In his defense, some of the coops I've seen scare me a little, but I'm sure mine wouldn't impress many either. Now, back to coop shopping....

Well I hope Uncle Marc returns, and won't let the poor folk run him off. lol And same to you! Good for you with your eglu. My parents live in a high end area too, but of course the HOA says no to chicks (and rabbits!) Very sad since those in the high end communities CAN afford to buy or construct the good coops. With that thought, I'm glad you bought an eglu to represent the fancy side of chicken keeping

I don't believe Uncle Marc wanted a fight.

OK, I think he is really wanting to know if we recycle or reuse because it is a chicken tradition. In other words HISTORICALLY are chicken coops built from junk that was on hand.

I have no facts to back it up, but every farmer I know is not wasteful and frugal. Farmers will use anything at hand to build coops.

I saw a farmer advertise on craigslist for chickens - roos, old hens, young didn't matter, just wanted them to eat the grains that the other animals spilled. If feed didn't cost him anything and he gets some eggs every once in a blue moon from and old hen he has lost nothing and gained an egg. Waste not want not.

Well of course there is. I post my findings to give others ideas of where and how they can use culled lumber. In return I get ideas of how to use what I have. My hoop coop came from someone else who posted on here. That's what BYC is to me. The meeting of like minded people in regards to chickens and our love of chickens and keeping chickens and petting chickens and breeding chickens and feeding chickens and, and , and .............................

I consider the people here my friends. Heaven knows no one in this house understands my love of fowl. So if they want to show off, I say , have at it. Nothing wrong with sharing with your friends. Good garden o' peas. If you can't show off to your friends who can you show off to.

I love the pics,

Rancher

I agree with DMRippy. I think it is kind of a tradition to make a beautiful coop out of whatever hodge podge you can find. I love how creative everyone is and I love that they show it off. Gives me ideas (as I hardly have a creative bone in my body). The school bus coop was really inspiring, makes me wish I could park an old broken down bus in my back yard. But really whether the coop is made of shining new wood fresh from the mill or an old kids play house I don't think the girls will notice. As long as they are toasty on a cold night and can mosey about on a warm summers day.

If you haven't looked at kuntrygirl's byc page, it's well worth your time. She makes fantastic structures from pallets and such. It's a great way to get ideas.
