I must say, Very nicely put. It's unfortunate but we all stereotype one way or another but you are so right on the mark on both sides of the fence. (just an expression) I too can not afford a beautiful coop and mine is built with mostly recycled wood but I did my research and made it astectic (?) looking as possible and I think I did a great job. I have had people walking past make comments of what a nice looking coop. Makes me feel good knowing that putting alittle effort into it was worth it.

Wow, now THAT is an inspirational story!! I have to say that I came from very poor beginnings. Well, we weren't just poor but we were slobs as well. My parents are from a third world country and when you come from that kind of poverty it does something to your sense of pride about things. Well, I grew up and married a rich guy lol (who I would love even if he had nothing). After lots and lots of soul searching I now take a different type of pride in my home and try to keep it really clean and neat. I have been accused of being snobby or uptight by my family. It makes me feel very alienated at times.

My husband is the sweetest man ever but he does have a hard time when others have "junky" yards, cars on blocks and such. I guess I bring a new kind of understanding to him because I know what it's like to be in other's shoes. The appearance of someones home/yard has nothing to do with what's in their heart..

Man, when did this thread get so deep? Uncle Marc, you just saved me $100 worth of therapy! Lol!!

Just wanted to add this. To have a coop at all is a blessing. My grandmother raised chickens in the second story apartment over the family business in a busy inner city back in the 50's. Imagine what HER neighbors thought.

Well I hope Uncle Marc returns, and won't let the poor folk run him off. lol And same to you! Good for you with your eglu. My parents live in a high end area too, but of course the HOA says no to chicks (and rabbits!) Very sad since those in the high end communities CAN afford to buy or construct the good coops. With that thought, I'm glad you bought an eglu to represent the fancy side of chicken keeping

I don't believe Uncle Marc wanted a fight.

The funny thing is my "high end" coop kinda looks junky right now! I need help from some BYC folks or something to make the run look better...

Whats wrong with the run?

Well, it's a dog run and you know how chainlink is not the most attractive thing. Right now it only has a tarp for a roof. My husband was supposed to put a roof up but he got sick and needs to rest for like a month. I'm really worried the snow is gonna tear it all down when he are gone for christmas holiday. :-(

Our coop is made from wire that came of someone elses run that they used for a while and the coop is made from old fenceboards that a friend of ours was getting rid of. It looks really good and only the main posts that keep it and the pig pen from going anywhere are things that we bought. We have a coop with almost completely reused materials

I have a dog kennel run with tarps among other miscellaneous things, including these roof panels for a portion of my roof. I just have mine tied down with wire.

Of course I didn't buy my roof panels new, but they look like the ones from Lowes. Mine came from the junk pile of old wood and other miscellaneous building materials behind my neighbors shed

He told me to help myself to whatever I could use, and he helped me tie the roof panels down. I also borrowed some wood boards to help place chicken wire along the bottom of the kennel to keep my cat's paws out of the holes and the little chickies in. I stapled the wire to the board, placed the boards at the base of the kennel and secured the top of the netting to the kennel with some wire twisties.
