why are fertalized eggs more that the chick

I have necountered the same situation pricing eggs on line. I suppose I should concentrate my search locally, within a 10 mile radius of my home. When the weather breaks i'll ask at the Amish farm house down the road. I am also leary of the Hatchery chicks being of solid stock. I guess If they were there wouldn't be so many folks hatching their own!

one reason IMO is just to see the miracle of the hatching process, how amazing that in just 3 weeks an egg that we all eat (or most of us)can turn into such a beautiful animal with the help of a light bulb,Ive been around chickens all my life but Im still amazed, its a wonderful thing, anyone can go to the feed store and buy chicks simple, its so much more satisfying to hatch them

I cant believe that chicks are that high there. I can go to Rural Kind and get all I want for $ 0.75 on sale with a 10 bird min. And I thought that was high.

I have wondered the same thing myself, it seems crazy anyone would pay that.

I guess you can get under the min. chick order by buying fewer eggs?

I think hatcheries price their eggs so high to discourage you from buying them. They are in the business of selling chicks, not eggs.

Do many have a replacement policy? If so I’m sure they end up replacing a lot of eggs, if the eggs don’t hatch the customer is going to blame the quality of the egg, not anything they may have done wrong…

I think a lot of it is that people want a higher quality bird than you can probably get from a huge hatchery, where the quality of the birds probably arent monitored like they are from a smaller personal hatchery.

well sure, but what *kind* of chicks are they.

Pat

They were buff orfingtons, BO, some dom and ! RIR Roo. I bought 75 and only lost 3 before the coons and owls got all them. They were all in good helth and looked good.

Gosh, I've never seen chicks at 75 cents each, even straight run! I'd take a chance on straight run at that price. My local feedstore buys thousands every year from Ideal of lots of different breeds. They charge $3.60 each for sexed pullets and sometimes, if the owner thinks they'll pay it, like for an Easter Egger, she'll charge $4 each. People here are paying it to get however few they want when they want them.

A girl there at the store showed me how to sex them, I picked 50 the first time and broght home 43 pullets and 7 roos. She showed me how to sex them by there wing feathers.
