Why are flies called flies?

    This just came to my mind today. Why are flies called flies? They aren't the only things that can fly. Why aren't birds and or bats called flies? For that matter why aren't fish called "swims"? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

    They were the first creature to be named. After flies was taken they had to resort to names like birds.

    LOL, I kinda laughed when I typed that, but I'm serious! If flies are called flies why don't the other animals have names like that?
