Why are Muscovy ducks ignore or forgotten?

I am actually considering getting Muscovies this spring. More for meat than anything else. I like the way they look. But, I think my guineas are beautiful, too! LOL!

I like seeing the pics of them. That one that was posted is gorgeous. Is that just a standard Muscovie? Or is it a certain color?

I had chosen the Muscovie to try for just the reasons stated. They don't need to be pinioned (I'm assuming that's like permanently clipping the wings??) if you have several acres, do they? Or would they still try and fly away in the fall?

Muscovies are from Central/South America. They do not migrate. I've had them since 2003 and never had them fly anywhere. My MIL lives across two horse pastures and has a pond. I give her my extras every fall and they live on her pond and in the goat pasture. Those fly from her house to my coop and the males try to fight each other through the wire.

Mine will flap their wings & run around the yard but I've never had them actually leave the ground.

why dont you hear about them? because they are SO EASY!!! man they are easy smeasy fun and quiet! and we are all to busy loving them and thinking 'geez they are easy' than to spend time complaining about them
:-)

we love ours... after a complete and total 'duckapalooza' this spring (we had 23 hatch!) we now have 7 more babies. they are adorable - i was just outside watching them. i put out a slightly deeper pan of water out for them and 5 of the 7 hopped right in and started snorkeling around! the cuteness was on overload!

no interest?? we had a guy drive over 4 hrs to get some of our spring babies... they were a hit!

honestly i dont think i'll have another breed of duck. they are the cats meow.

:-)

Mine havent flown away either. One of them fly's up to the roof and sits up there for a while but that's it. I love them, I think they are one of those birds that once you have them , you dont know how you did without them. They have so much personality they put my chickens to shame. They are also AMAZING mothers. I love their little sounds too.....

I like the sound of all their attributes, but I really, REALLY find them unattractive. I suppose it's shallow of me, but I cannot get past the red, infected looking, poxy faces, to the true beauty underneath. I love my smooth faced duckies, and have a true fascination with the spot where bill becomes face. It is my favorite part of a duck, like a miracle, and I would be less than thrilled with a muscovy duck... that said, i reserve the right to change my mind.

Just look at it like the glue that hooks the head to the bill, it doesnt start developing for a couple months so the babies look like your other duckies for awhile. Mine's carunkles arent that big and believe me once you get to know them and see how great their personality is... i dont even notice it...

I like the caruncles. They are like the chickens' combs. Very vibrant colors, and set the bird off, in my opinion. Also, you can breed for more or less in the caruncle department. Mine aren't overly big. Just right.

Anyway, I love my muscovies, too. I have 7 of them, and they are the sweetest, funniest creatures!

I miss my scovies. Especially Mobert, who liked to climb in my lap and go to sleep. He also would tell me all about his day and if I tried to walk away before he was done, he would grab hold of my pants leg and hold on until I stopped and turned back around. At which time he would start talking again.
They have quite the personalities and are very smart.
