Why are my ducks looking at me so funny?!?!

Nifty... sssuuuuurrre they were looking at a hawk... You are in major denial my friend. I would think twice again before going out to your ducks while wearing you valentine heart jammies.

Not too worried about the hawks... all our girls are too fat for the ones we have around here, and they probably have plenty of easier things to eat.

While a hawk can't carry off a full grown duck, it CAN decapitate it and eat the brains, which is now why my duck run is covered in netting. (RIP Uno and Bebe)​

We'll keep an eye on them for sure, but in the 6 years we've had chickens we've never had a bird-of-prey issue out here. It's a risk that we're taking, at least for now, to give them free access to the whole yard.

I didn't think hawks would be a problem. I was more worried about stray dogs.

That hawk that hit us last fall came back last week. I went outside and it was using our pond as a drinking fountain as it eyeballed the ducks who were safely in their covered pen.

Yeesh, that's scary for sure!

I'm glad we haven't had to deal with that. I LOVE hawks and would hate having to confine the girls or put up a bunch of netting.

I love that look. It makes my swedish look like a bunch of runners when they get real into and stand up all straight.

The cutest thing right now is my mamma Cocoa will look up at the birds and airplanes flying over to keep watch over her ducklings. Then you look down at the ducklings and they have the same look but they are looking at the butterflies flying above the pond.

NOt a duck story, but one day I was out hanging up laundry on the clothesline. All of a sudden, I hear this hysterical screeching coming from the rooster, and all the hens who were scattered around the yard started running for cover. I started looking around bewildered to see what had caused this. My dd was flying a kite in the horse pasture nearest the house. The roo saw it and warned all the ladies. I got dd to move from where she was flying the kite, but it still took a good half hour for the chickens to come out from there cover.

After we discovered the casue of their hysteria, we were hysterical with laughter.
