Why are People So Paranoid?

Yup, I was sent to work in the garden digging potatoes, picking green beans off the vine, and when I got old enough (and big enough haha) to swing a machete it was cutting down sugar cane, or helping prune the trees. Papa always had to take me to see and feed his chickens and get the eggs, never mind it was early in the day. He never had goats, but I would have been sent to play with them if he had! Haha! Still remember digging for crawdads and playing in the creek too. Good times.

I've had chickens, and ducks, and geese, on and off since 1987, have never used masks, gloves, special clothes or washed my hands after every contact. When I had ducks and geese, I would even use their 'ripe' pond water and dump it by the bucketful into the garden, again, no gloves (I did wash my hands after doing that obviously!) And I have never come down with anything other than being completely spoiled from the taste of real eggs.
It's crazy. Our modern culture/society has us so far removed from REAL food that real food is now "scary" to us.

My husbands family about has a heart attack every time they come over and our two year old is out running around, holding chickens, kissing goats, drinking RAW goats milk, and eating apples plucked right from the tree. Yet they can't answer me as to why she's only been sick once, and it was a cold that lasted three days :lau
That's called not letting your immune system fall into disuse. The more people try and isolate themselves from everything the more susseptable they're going to end up to anything.

I hardly ever wash my hands at home, the only time I do at all is when I have been messing with something "gross" like handling raw meat, even then I usually just rinse with water and towel dry, don't use soap very often... And I play with raw chicken and just dry my hands off then eat finger food all the time... I haven't ever eaten a raw egg, but I have undercooked my eggs quite a bit several times to where the yolk was barely cooked and there was a pool of liquid whites around it on top of the cooked whites... again, haven't gotten sick from that...

In fact, I don't believe I have EVER gotten sick from food, I have gotten an upset stomach and run to the bathroom a few times, but that's usually related to eating too much protein or dairy at once (last time was I ate an 11 ounce steak, fries, and 3 scoops of ice cream all in one night) but I don't call that being SICK since I don't throw up or feel queasy, just get liquid guts and gas...

Hahaha yes. I have never gotten sick from my food or my families...but from restaurants, yes.

Mainly buffets. So I won't eat at them anymore. Unless it's an I ndian food buffet- I think they put enough spice in everything to kill any food borne grossness :lau

Hubbs has been harassing me to go to Golden Corral with him since the day we met. I told him he can go by himself. I am not a cow and I'm certainly not going to dinner at a corral.;)

LOL! This thread is so true. We just got our newsletter from the local medical center in town yesterday and guess what one of the headliners was? You guessed it.. Salmonella and Your Backyard Chicken! They did recommend dry wiping off eggs, but oddly enough then said to store them in the refrigerator.

It is very interesting how so many of us will just take what someone says as truth without ever asking questions about it or further searching out additional information.
