Why are People So Paranoid?

See, a the thing for me... I didn't grow up on a farm, I was mostly in suburbia, but the couple of times we lived in the country made a huge impression on me, and I love the lack of people and my few neighbors... wish I was deeper in than I am, but you work with what you get. This is my first time owning livestock, and I love my girls, but everyone I Oakes with knew that if any of them were cockerels they were going in the freezer. Some were really horrified by that. But I work at the largest builder of submarines in the world, and there are a lot of people. And most of them are city kids.
I love GD... So you're probably in the new London area... I was there for the keel laying of the uss Indianapolis.

I missed on the whole flavor thing... I can still eat an omelet at a restaurant as long as I have plenty of salsa and stuff in it. With the exception of Popeye's, I can't eat chicken out. After eating mine for a year, I can't do tasteless, watered down, squishy chicken or eggs for that matter.

Only time I got honest to goodness food poisoning was one: the place with the golden arches out front (I thought I was going to die)... and two: a Chinese place in a mall food court. I have never, ever, been sick from anything I or anybody else in my family prepared. Take that fast food industry! lol

ME TOO!!! I didn't even really eat there. I was on a road trip & stopped for a mocha frappe & some fries... I got so sick I literally thought I was gonna die! Never, NEVER again! :sick

I do have to admit I get a near childish glee from scaring the wussy city people that come here.

Banti, you are seriously terrifying! No really, you really are scary! Look at the terror you're inflicting upon me. :wee

All kidding aside... Pink Slime is ok, but farm fresh eggs are bad? The world is going crazy! :barnie

I gross my husband out because I feed my cats and dog raw chicken daily (that's their meal), and they get raw eggs every now and then (usually when I can't decide if the eggs are still safe after being in the fridge for forever).. I just toss it all on the concrete floor in the basement and they lick the floor clean... it's not that gross, and actually, that spot in the floor is the cleanest in the basement I think!

Haah. Hubby was cuttin up some calf liver today for fishin and tellin the dogs nope it might not be safe to feed yall this raw meat... i told him they get bites almost every day when i cook. He looked at me funny and started feedin yummy liver 'nacks to the pups all merrily. Pups were more than pleased to partake. Silly man.

I eat farm eggs all the time. Cookie dough too. .so are you actually SUPPOSED to wash eggs for eating or not? I've heard different opinions on this. I know the whole thing about washing in warmer water than the egg. Same thing is recommended for most fruits and vegetables. I'm guilty of eating unwashed eggs from chickens butts. . did I just dodge the bullet? Lol

I think part of the problem is that nobody is taught the difference between risk and the likelihood of the risk or the magnitude of the risk if it happens.

They just want to feed people dumbed-down "advice" which people then think will "protect" them.

You are better protected by getting all of the information and having a real understanding of what's going on. This crazy "we must eliminate all bacteria" mindset is what has led to antibiotic-resistant bacteria and "superbug" infections.
I'd rather have a bout of gastro than sepsis from something you can't even treat....

And yes, children need to be exposed to dirt and bugs to build their immune systems.

I find it amazing that people would worry about a natural part of life (exposure to bacteria) and yet they'll happily down a jar full of "god-knows-what" from the supermarket. Have you ever had a good look at the ingredients lists on (some) prepared supermarket foods? There doesn't seem to be any actual food in amongst the chemicals. It might not make you sick immediately like gastro bugs, but is there any nutrition in there?
