why are they eating the hay?

My hens are eating the hay/straw that is in their nesting boxes How can I stop them ? should I remove it? and just use shavings

Its edible. They are telling you they need some greens, some roughage, some more food that is not chicken feed.

ON a different note - if they eat too much it cause an impacted crop. Give them some greens to feast on.

If you just put the hay in the nest,Its most likely to have the seed heads still in the hay and thats what there after
