Why are they SO loud?

Mine have always been loud. That’s just who they are! They announce everything. If you free range them, they will quiet down because they will be occupied with other matters. But when they lay eggs they will always sing. Bring your neighbors some eggs as an apology.
Before I got chickens, all the talk was about a rooster crowing. I have three roosters and 9 hens actively laying. My hens are way louder than the roosters. I can't wrap my head around the concept of city ordinances which allow hens but not roosters. It's as if no one realizes how loud hens can be. I feel it's a moral/ethical quandary because I want people to have the freedom to have a flock, but it can still cause domestic feathers to be ruffled when the egg song annoys neighbors and the poor flock owners had no idea the egg song would be so loud and persistent.

Some breeds are less noisy than others, but in the end you can't predict what your hens will be like unless you buy them when they are full grown and actively laying.

I’ve always wondered about this bias, but I think it’s the time of day. Hens don’t sing early in the morning and wake everyone up. Well some do 🤣

I've had chickens almost my whole life and the hens are so loud when they first lay or are getting ready to lay but it does get quiet after they all start to lay it's kinda like the ones that are laying are doing a nananana at the ones that are not but once they all start they can't do it anymore
Really?! That would be so fantastic if mine are that way. I don't mind them making their little chicken sounds, but the screaming song is a little much 🤪 Hopefully I have your luck... do you free range or have a coop+run?

I agree! I had no idea they would be so noisy... and we even gave our little roo away because of that. We feel awful that they're so loud, and it's frustrating because I love my girls but I don't want to be "that" person in the neighborhood that people don't like. Fingers crossed that maybe the song won't be SO loud in the future. And I thought we picked some quieter breeds 😂

Just talk to your neighbors. You never know if it bothers them until you ask. And perhaps they won't mind so much if you're able to share eggs.

Mine are loud too. This morning I thought a predator had gotten into the run. Turns out, Cora was in Dotty's favorite box, so Dotty was standing right next to the box Cora was in, screaming her head off. I assume something like "GET OUT OF MY BOX!!!"

Both they only free range under supervision I don't trust my neighbors dog ya i have 39hens in my main coop and they are so loud right now but they have always calmed down i had to start all over this yr my oldest and last hen from my old flock died in November last yr at 9yo so I'm starting a new and added rooster rescueing to my house of madness and love it just give it some time and do what @humblehillsfarm said and take your neighbors some eggs to make up for all the noise they will love it my one neighbor lives alone i have known him my whole life he just walks over and gets eggs when ever he wants them out of the coop he ask me the other day where are the eggs I had to give him some out of my fridge from my moms house mine aren't laying yet
