Why are they STILL sneezing?!?! **URGENT HELP NEEDED**

I have a relatively small flock of birds, (60 or so chickens, 14 quail, 2 pheasants, and 5 guineas.) A month or so ago I noticed that a few of them were sneezing, then I think it spread.. (more kept sneezing.) The symptoms I had were sneezing, runny nose, and a little noise that they had when they breathed (which I didnt notice at the time.) I spent HOURS injecting each and every bird with tylan, for the 3 days. I think the sneezing slowed down, but it may have been my imagination, because it never COMPLETELY stopped. Now I think they are starting to sneeze more again. WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS?!

Did I treat for the wrong thing?

What could it be if Tylan 50 didnt help?

Unfortunately, Tylan won't work if it's a viral infection. I bought some pullets from a breeder that seemed fine, but the moment I turned them loose in the coop, I noticed they were coughing and sneezing. A few have died, but most have recovered. I went to the feed store to get Tylan, but their "poultry expert" recommended against it. The antibiotics would only help if there was a secondary bacterial infection.

It's been very frustrating for me - I had chickens several years ago - a pretty good sized flock, and never had any disease issues. Now the first batch I brought in is sick, and I can't increase the size of my flock until they are all better...

I feel for you. Check the ammonia level in your coop related to the amount of poo that has built up. It can effect their breathing. Check for mold. I lost some chicks in a brooder to mold that effected their respiratory systems. Mold was down under the pine shavings where moister was trapped.

With a lot of diseases they never completely get over it. It keeps reoccuring and even if they seem to have gotten over it they remain carriers and continue to spread it to other birds. If it is viral, which it more than likely is, you can give them antibiotics forever and it's not going to do any good.

There is nothing that will help with a virus. The best thing to do is have one tested by a vet so you know what illness you're dealing with.

I just ran across your post while looking for a reason why my hens are sneezing (slightly runny nose on some). All of my hens are laying fine, eating fine and acting fine just showing signs of a "cold" which I know chickens don't really get. We have had nonstop rain for weeks so the run is awful but I keep their coop clean and dry, bleach water to keep mold away, healthy food and vitamins in the water etc but I still have the problem. I am thinking in my case it is just the damp cold weather we have been having. It's very frustrating so I feel for you!
