Why Aren't My Chickens Laying? Here Are Your Answers!

Pics
Im just letting my girls do what they do. Mine are more for enjoyment than anything else. Some days I will get 5 and some days I will only get one. I did have a hen who was 4 or 5 years old and I would get between 3 to 5 eggs a week from her alone. I thought that was really cool. But I guess if they need to take a break, let them. Could you imagine pushing out something that large every day? :)

My chickens stopped laying eggs and while I had a light in the hen house I decided to up the amount of time it would be on - to no avail. We actually broke down and bought some of those white eggs the store has.

I finally thought that maybe its not only having a light but also having the right quality of light. I switched from my florescent shop light to a bright "daylight" bulb and the eggs are coming back.

thanks for your advice i will try all you sugested and good knews i got a egg today dont know if it means there starting up again or just a a one time thing hopefully there starting up

My chickens started slowing down in the fall when they were 1 1/2 years old. They were molting and when done did not lay more than 1 egg per day from 11 chickens. I learned from my feed guy to put 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper in one gallon of water and give to them. I did that and after 10-14 days, I was averaging 5 eggs per day. The cayenne helps increase their circulation so they spend less energy keeping warm (I'm in MI) and have energy to spend laying eggs. The cayenne does not effect the chickens or the eggs. I've read lots about this and many people say it is an old wive's tale. Maybe they didn't keep at it long enough?? I told a friend and she too is now getting eggs. It works and I'm thrilled!

Now we are getting 13 eggs a day from 24 hens...the fodder we are growing and feeding seems to be helping too! Eggs have a real good shell, and they are beautiful! Everyone is happier at the farm at the moment. Son is happy because it is taking him less time to do chores with the fodder and the bunnies and chickens are all lovin it!! So Mama is happy too!
