Why aren't they laying?

Our chickens haven't laid in well over 1 1/2 months. We know that some had molted because their old feathers were everywhere but I think their new feathers have now grown back. If they are done molting, shouldn't they be laying again? Last year they went about a month or so without laying but it seems that this year it has lasted a lot longer. Does the cold weather have anything to do with it? Or, should we try different feeding methods like oyster shells?

As you know chickens stop laying during molt so as to save the protein for feather building, Most also stop laying when the number of daylight hours drops below 14. This (I assume) is so they won't be burdened with trying to raise a bunch of hungry beaks during winter when food is scarce, and they themselves become more desirable AS a source of food!

Plus if your birds are a year older, they aren't going to bounce back as quickly as the year before. Feeding them a higher protein ration can help them to molt and recover a bit quicker.

They should have oyster shells always available in a separate container.
What and how exactly are you feeding?
Do you free range?

Chances are you're going to have to wait until the days begin to grow longer after Winter Solstice, how long after remains to be seen.

Oh, and, Welcome to BYC!
