why cant geese lay eggs yet?

Just got my first goose egg today from my Pilgrims. This is her first year laying so hopefully everything goes well. So far she has been very secret in her dealing with the nest, but as its a dog house in their pen, she can't really hide them from me. The gander has been mating with her for a few weeks but I will still be checking the fertility of the first eggs just to be sure. Then some in an incubator and some for her to sit on. I figure that way less chance of loosing all. I hope everyone get lots of eggs! Anyone else seeing eggs?
may i ask what part of the world youre in tivona???!

This will be our first year with a trio of West of England Geese and we are hoping to incubate the eggs ourselves.

My gander has become a bit more aggressive than usual lately. He has started to charge if we turn our back on him every time.

He is also getting jiggy with one of his girls and ignores the other girl.

When do you think we could expect eggs from her? He is not really bothering the other girl at all so I assume she is not going to lay eggs anytime soon?

Thanks

My other half has just informed me that she was sitting in her nest area for about 2-3 hrs but still no sign of eggs.
Practice. Good to see you mystil

Western Oregon in the USA. We are still having freezes at night but my day lilies are poking up, the cress, kale and parsley are growing and the grass is green...could be just my area that the geese are getting going. Its almost looks more like spring then winter. Everyone here says the ganders are acting up but I haven't heard about any others with eggs yet. It seems early but with the way mine have been acting I knew to be watching for eggs from her. Still it seems a bit early. My last goose, and Embden, never laid. Something defective in her I guess. I had her for 3 years. This is the first egg I have had from my geese so I can't tell you if this is crazy early but its earlier then I was expecting.

I know that light hours, breed, age, and climate all effect when they start to lay. I can't say on when other breeds start usually here, only that mine are Pilgrims that were hatched at the beginning of June last year by someone in the area. There were embden goslings here as well last year (not mine) at the start of May. Counting back the incubation time and days for laying for them it does sound like this is early...hopefully we don't have too bad of weather from here on.

How do you like the West of England Geese? I was looking to see if I could find some before I got my Pilgrims but no one here in the USA seems to have any.

I saw an attempt at mating this evening, very weird poor Missy, Sam had her head hung over the side of the bucket I was afraid he'd brake her neck, of course first chance she got she took off. It's been too frigid to give the actual pool water for mating. Maybe this weekend.

My yearling African goose started laying quite prolifically in December, and now that it's warm enough for them to use the pool and for me to keep the eggs from freezing she's almost stopped! I've only gotten 3 eggs in 10 days. Still waiting for a 4th to set with a couple duck eggs.

I love my trio of West of Englands. I love the variety of different patterns on the girls and the fact they are auto sexing is a massive bonus.
They are pretty laid back and although ours are not hand tame (and my Gander tolerates me) the gander loves my other half. Typical male bonding thing, I guess.

At the moment their routine is-

We let them out. Gander and one of his wives go out into the field to eat, preen and he has his way with her. His other wife stays in the house to sit on nothing (eggs coming soon possibly).

Our gander then realises that he is missing a wife and does his nut calling to his wife in the shed.

He then spends his time running between the two making a lot of noise. I think he is telling his wives to get their act together and stop making he run around after them.

They just ignore him. Go girls! haha

This has been going on for at least a week now. Makes my laugh everytime.

I have enjoyed my learning experience with my Sebastopol. Even though they are last year's hatch they began laying in early February. I have the incubators full and decided to see if they could hatch some. I have 3 setting. I was greatly surprised the first time my two males decided I was no longer their buddy but some intruder. I guess I thought they trusted me but when breeding started I was an outcast. Lol
