Why Can't You Put Quail and Chickens Together

Since the quail were brought to me to be hatched 2 years ago by the NM Fish and Game Dept. I have had several birds introduced and replaced due to an attack on my coop. The local quail intermingle with the quail that were hatched here and return to nest. Dani Quail never left, when she was released she flew into a mesquite bush and lost her tail feathers so I brought her back until they grew back. She was raised with chickens and ducks. Her family regularly returns along with quail that are wild and boy do we have a ton of them. They eat here, drink here, and tend to hide in the coop when the hawks are around. Here are Dani and Dan Quail and Coby Rooster. I'm glad you would love to see them,,, here they are. If you would care to challenge me again, go ahead.

So.. do all quail carry disease or something? Or do all chickens carry disease that can spread to quail?
Just wondering how that works...

You are VERY lucky. If one does get coryza and the wild birds intermix with them then you have ruined your local quail population... Personally I wouldn't risk it, but I guess some will.

Most chickens are carriers of a disease called coryza. They don't show symptoms though making it impossible to tell without trial and error. Quail catch it and it spreads like wildfire.

I would not take what everyone says on here to be 100% true all the time.
Noone knows everything ...i'm sure theres truth to both sides.... folks CAN keep quail with chickens...and some folks have had them die from it....
So theres how you get different answers from people.
Maybe their birds carried diseases though? I dont know.... all you can do is try it and see what happens for yourself.
but i will tell you one thing,,, i had a quail get loose once in my yard, and my chickens surrounded it and tried to tear it apart,...
So make sure your chickens cant get ahold of your quail. Or they can hurt them. Again... it doesnt happen ALL the time.... but it did with me.

O.K. I can believe a few quail sticking around or returning from time to time to the place they were hatched.. But just so you know, In MY opinion, this is a ticking time bomb for your quail along with the wild population that come into contact with them.. If you click on the link Robo provided, This is caused by a disease that chickens can carry without any signs at all.. This disease is readily passed to quail or other types of poultry they come into contact with. This disease can destroy complete populations of quail in a matter of DAYS!!

Ahh.. good to know... so its generally the chickens that spread the disease...
Thanks for the info!

If I pet or feed/water my chickens and I don't wash my hands and go to my quails will they still get that disease?

The quail get the short end of the stick. I've never seen a quail give a chicken something, but it could very well happen. chickens have immunities to certain things that game birds and turkeys do not, including coryza with the game birds.
