why did my white silkie rooster attack my silkie hen

Got up this morning to find my white silkie rooster attacking my white silkie hen ,he messed up her head pretty bad, my neighbor helped me take care of her and she looks like she is gonna be fine,there was alot of blood but no deep wounds.Why all of a sudden would he do this?He is sepperated from her now and will not be going in the same coop with her.I only have the two of them.I am new to raising silkies .This was very upsetting to me because he is very friendly with me and the kids.
