Why did you get your first chickens?

always had a bird of some sort, but now that I liver were live stock is alowed, I went for the chickens. They started laying last week. 4 out of 5 are laying a egg (of some sort) every day, but I thing one hen has not started laying yet? They are all just 5 month old so I'm not worried too much, and you never know it may be a rooster? this chicken has never made a sound, not even a peep as a chick. but what ever it is, it's my friendles.

I got the idea to get chickens when i went to my friend's house....she had seabrights and i fell in love with how cute they were. So after lots and lots of research i persuaded my dad in letti ng me get chickens. we bought a coop for them and then we bought them from a "chicken dealer". that was a year ago and this year i got 4 more chickens. My flock just seems to get bigger and bigger. :)

( 1 RIR, 2 silkies, 3 orpingtons, 6 barred plymouth rocks, 1 ameracauna, 1 silver-laced wyandotte )

I have wonderful memories of my grandparents farm in Cuba and chasing, holding and snuggling with chickens with my grandparents laughing at me because, to them, they were dinner! I came to this country when I was six and always lived in the city so was never able to have chickens. Now, 50 years later, my husband and I have our dream home and I finaly have my flock! On January 29th my babies
arrived, 17 of them! All healthy and alive! Ordered 9 pullets and got 8 additional male buff Brahma's for "warmth". I thought I would find homes for the roos ASAP......yea right! Getting too attached them. I know I can only keep one of the roos but it is going to be hard to give them up.
It has been a great experience so far and I am hooked!

What wise counselors you have! Chickens are definitely a wonderful antidote for our disconnection from the natural world. Just watching my five girls scratch and peck and stretch their wings....and gathering their precious, beautiful eggs.... it truly does give me a lift! PLUS: it is my JOB to care for these beautiful birds who give me eggs and entertainment every day, and everyone needs a meaningful job. Way to go!

My family moved to a new house further out in the country. I had always wanted animals, and now I had a place to put them! My parents were planning on eventually having animals, but my mom wanted to learn gardening first and my dad works. He isn't really a farm animal type of guy, anyways. He prefers dogs. Well, after the move my parents were really tired and we didn't go anywhere or do anything FOREVER! There were no teens in the new neighborhood and I was bored out of my head.
My siblings and I played board games and card games and learned to cook on fires and it was great. For awhile. But all that got old and I was restless. So I asked for a dog. My mom DOES NOT like dogs, but she agreed.

So I got my first puppy, Maggie. It wasn't long before I was ready for my next animal. (I wasn't bored with Maggie. That's not my style. I love all my animals. I just like to add new ones whenever possible.) I wasn't sure how my parents would react to me asking for another animal, so I went with one I knew they both wanted. Chickens!
I got the approval. Sorta. "If you can figure out a way to house them and take care of them, then sure."

They weren't ready to build the coop yet, so I learned about tractors! I started collecting scrap wood and such and got my dad to show me a few building tips. So I built a tractor. I requested chicken feed for my birthday. (Can anyone say "Farm child at heart"?) I got chicken feed from one family, and a pair of Rhode Island Reds from my Nana. And so I had chickens! My flock grew faster than you could imagine! (Okay, I'm sure some of you could imagine.) People just kept giving me chickens! It was amazing! I had to build 3 more tractors! I started hatching gifted eggs in a borrowed incubator. Then my parents and I built the permanent coop. I have no idea how many chickens I have anymore, and the flock keeps growing! Not to mention all the other animals.

My husband went to Dallas for the weekend for an archery contest. Our little girl stayed with her Grammy for the weekend and when we got home my mother-in-law had bought our daughter 4 chicks. I said what in the world are we gonna do with four chicks. I was a little angry at first because we had to spend the money on all the supplies as my mother in law said they are ours now and not her responsibility . So we did. I am an animal lover and we went all out! We even bought 20 more chicks and two ducklings. It has been close to a year since we received the first four. Sad to say we have lost most of our chickens to an unknown predator but I have 25 chicken eggs a and two goose eggs in the incubator ready to hatch this Monday.

We got chickens because we had chickens a while back. But we moved and my grandma and mom went and surprised us with about 9 baby chicks and from that day we just got obsessed with chickens right now we have 32 chickens with some about to hatch !!!

I didn't like how my parents were eating so many store-bought eggs, because I think the poor, miserable hens crammed in cages was cruel and I wanted to change it for my family and friends. My dad was already kind of wanting chickens because he liked the idea of fresh eggs every morning. :p I live on a farm and I tried to convince my dad for soo long that our farm needed more than just tractors and cows. So that spring we got 11 chicks and they were very fun and I would watch them do nothing for hours! :) I've made over $300 just this year from selling a dozen eggs $2 each. My family sometimes gives me $5 for how well I take care of my chickens, and I have a rich customer that buys eggs for $10 a dozen!!!
