Why didn’t my broody’s eggs hatch?

Hi there,

I have a silkie hen that LOVES to go broody (she’s not even a year yet and this is her third bout). This time around I got her some hatching eggs since I don’t have a roo. She started out with 5, we pulled 1 on candleing day that wasn’t fertile, so that left her with 4. We had one hatch right on day 21, but nothing from the other 3. Day 25 is tomorrow, and we did the “water test” and that didn’t look promising. We gave them back to her just in case. Last time we candled, they all looked like they were coming along nicely. Shes been the best little mama! Diligently sits on her clutch and is never off the nest for more than a few minutes.

any ideas on what went wrong?

If the eggs were shipped that can course issues, especially if they eggs got delayed. I got silkie eggs shipped 6 to be exact, only one hatched the others were moving but then they stopped. I’d candle them to see if they are still moving. It’s not very good news if it’s day 25 and they haven’t hatched yet. If it helps the chick that hatched is genetically more likely to be a hen, not that I am guaranteeing that, I just thought it was a cool fact. I hope they hatch. And you never know miracles can happen

What is the fact here? Why is it genetically more likely? I’m trying to get a broody going and I’d like to know how to possibly be able to tell.

I’m not sure what the science is behind why, but mine ended up being a hen.

It's not more likely to get a female then a male
There's only two choices and a 50/50 chance on which one it would be.

That was my thinking and why I asked the question.
