They are so cute. I have two and they are the shyest of the bunch though. They hate to be picked up. When I give hard boiled egg for a treat they swarm like piranahs (sp?) but one BO has NEVER gotten her treat. She always stays away in the corner. I try to throw her some then distract the others but it doesn't always work. Any ideas about this?? Here is a pic of mine...................so sweet!

My Buffy is such a big girl, and she's so cute. She's got the fluffiest butt of the flock! She's very curious, likes to follow me around and tell me chicken stories. She never gets into the coop early enough to get up on the highest roost before it's too full, so she has started to sleep in a nestbox. That's annoying, but she really does look CUTE sitting in there.

She's the one in my avatar - I took that picture when she was still an "adolescent."

My Buff Op is also the sweetest out of my bunch (Red Star, Barred Rock, EE, Black Sex Link). She is 6 weeks and is the only one who will not even flinch when I go to pick her up. I haven't named her yet, but I was thinking of calling her Buffy also

I have a 1 year Buff Orpington that is not very friendly even though I handled her as a chick.

I have another one in the brooder right now that is about 3 weeks old. She is not friendly either. She dislikes being held the most out of the 22 chicks in the brooder. I do hold her every day even though she fights it.

I was not planning to add another Buff Orpington this year but.... We were at a feed store picking up a few other chicks. We looked at all of the tubs of chicks. When we looked at the BO tub there was only one chick in it. It looked soo loney.

I was thinking that someone would come along soon and buy it. However, my wife and daughters kept looking at it. Finally my wife looked at me with sad eyes and asked how I could leave it by itself. She asked if we could find one for one more. My daughters joined in with her asking. Then the store employee said that it does look pretty lonely. She also reminded us it was late in the day and that we were probably the last chick customers of the day. I guess the other family standing there with an empty box behind us was invisable to everyone but me

. I was not going to turn down the chance to own another chick. I put it in our box. My wife is usually the strong one that says we have enough...

hi mrbstephens! a fellow long islander here! BO's are my only chicken currently. they are the cutest in my humble opinion! unfortunately i just lost one my hens this past week, it was very sudden — she had just turned 1.

we are soo sad. they are very docile and mine love being held and kissed. we love them loads. my chicks were a little skittish (or at least a few were) until they started laying (at only 4 months old i might add)! i have a broody one at the moment who is sitting on a mixed bag of fertile eggs but my heart is not in them. i may keep 1, tops 2 if they hatch. but what i really want is more buff orpingtons! not that they can replace Crazy Comb but i love looking at those beautiful yellow, golden orange feathers running around our yard. a friend is going to a feed store in PA this weekend, i told her to get us 4 b/o chicks. i don't think i can ever have too much. except the town of huntington states we are only allowed 8, oh well. i figure if they are all the same color, nobody will ever know!

sorry about all the lower case, i'm feeling lazy today and still sad over losing Crazy! she was the loudest hen and her absence is really apparent. even the other hens seem subdued. got to get more b/o's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
