Why do a lot of people give their chickens "little old lady" names?

I love giving my chickens little old lady names and people names like Ruby vs "thing" names ie. Spike, or Big Bird. (no offence! I had a Big Bird and a Super Chicken as a kid!)! I take it way to seriously though! I research the breed and find out where and when they were developed. Then I hit the baby names or common names listed for that country and era. Then I pick the ones I like the best. Sometimes it takes a few months to name a chicken and then sometimes I rename them to another name that fits them better.

I had a Bernice. I also had two barred rocks I called the twins. One was named Boss Lady and the other was just called the boss ladys sister. I also had a chicken named turkey head. I also had a group of chickens I called the garbage guts because they would eat things the other picky pants wouldn't eat.

If you watch the back of a chicken as it's walking away from you it will explain it! They waddle like little old ladies or at least most of mine do!!

LOL, I have 3 named Spot. There's Spot, Light Spot and Dark Spot. Lucy, because that hen is just as independent and nosy as my grandmother Lucy. Goldie Hen is my avatar. Lacy, because of her blue lacing. Pokey, because his gender was up for debate for a year. JJ is named after JarJar Binks.

I have many more, but they really only get names after they distinguish themselves. I can tell them all apart and know which are which, but I don't try to name each and every one. The ducks are Wynken, Blynken and Odd.

Sheesh. You just made me count heads. 29 chickens and 3 ducks.

We have Henrietta Houdini (you should be able to figure out that one) and a barred rock named Janet Reno.

The rest are hey you, Ladies (collectively) but there is Snowy, Opal (Snowy's daughter who is almost pink) Fussy Butt, and Scairdey Cat WHo is indeed a hen.

he roo is Roo Roo or Romeo.

Now I need names for two female goats. One daughter wants Patience and Prudence the other is adamantly opposed....

I named ours after fertility type goddesses...

Too often I've heard about pets/livestock living up to their name... like Killer, Tornado, etc.

Figured naming layers after fertility... well IF they lived up to THAT name it'd be awesome.

Wonder what living up to Freda or Marge would look like exactly?
