I was just wondering why chickens have salmonella. Animals like pigs cows and lambs can be cooked pretty raw but you've never heard I'll take my chicken medium rare they have to be cooked at a certain temperature for a certain time so it doesn't make you deathly ill (right?). As well as their eggs.:sick

Salmonella bacteria is in the gut of people and a lot of animals. The chicken risk has to do with contamination of the meat at some point during processing.

The real foods to worry about, though, are the ones that don't get cooked, such as raw vegetables (lettuce, salad, etc) and deli meats.

Salmonella is common in factory farms where conditions are poor. It's generally picked up by the chickens from rodent droppings and chickens can catch it from each other. Rodents are generally the source of most salmonella contamination. Salmonella can be contracted from contaminated milk, eggs, beef, and fruits and vegetables as well as chicken. Proper storage and preparation is the best way to avoid it.

There are many strains of salmonella. Only a few make us sick.
