Why do I beat myself up about butchering a few cockerels.

Bow Hunting is my favorite type of hunting. This past year I harvested my biggest buck every. Although its not a buck of a life time. Its a success for me. I thanks God everyday for the things he provides. I thanked him for the buck before the arrow even was released.

Again Thanks everyone. I know and understand that it was needed and more than likely before this corona thing is over we may just need all the meat we can get.

Nothing against your friends, but I find it disturbing (assuming they eat store bought chicken) that they would give you grief for taking the responsibility, time, and putting in the work to raise your own food, ensuring its quality, while they just pick theirs up off the shelf after letting other people do the work for them.

Sounds to me like they need to educate themselves to chicken keeping. Invite them to join BYC and talk them into getting a few birds and giving it a try.😁

Ok, im climbing down off my high horse now.
They don't live where I am if they did I'd make them try my chicken. Plus I'd make them eat my eggs too then they'll dislike both store bought eggs and meat 😂

I moved years ago down south. Everyone who lives here respects what I do, it's the people in New England that are giving me grief over it.

I'm going hunting hopefully this year. Im doing it with a crossbow. I can't wait!

As someone who eats meat, there is no way I can criticize someone who humanely culls and butchers. Should there ever come a day when I can completely eliminate meat from my diet, then and ONLY then could I not be a hypocrite about someone else.

I used to be a newspaper editor and reviewed books for our weekly farm publication. One of the books, Barry Estabrook's Pig Tales, made me quit eating pork. He described how intelligent pigs are, some were taught to play computer games. I guess I'm lucky that the books on chickens and cows weren't as well written!!

I immediately name all of my critters so they will be considered pets, not food. But I still buy a lot of chicken at the grocery store. Guess you're not the only weird-o.
Because animals are creatures with feelings too, I don’t eat cheap meat from big industrial farms.
I could not kill animals other than insects myself, especially not my own chickens.

Its not weird having a hard time to kill roosters or other life stock. For me its weird that there are so many people who enjoy killing animals we can interact with like mammals and birds.

I'm an omnivore, not a herbivore, so meat is on my menu. I prefer it to be from animals who have had the best lives possible, not some critter in bad conditions for most of it's life. So, we eat chickens and eggs raised right here, and I try to be selective about other meats in our freezer.
Almost all people living in the USA now are city folks, far removed from their food production, and develop this sense that 'food grows in styrofoam at the supermarket'. My daughter, who grew up on our farm, now buys those nice white grocery store eggs, rather than our 'weird' multicolored home grown eggs!
There's no logic involved!!!

I bow hunt even though muzzleloader or firearm seasons if the freezer is well stocked. I love the challenge of getting myself in the right spot to harvest a mature buck up close.
