Why do my dog's ear smell bad?

Zymox works well, they make a cleanser and drops to put in the ear. Petco has it, Amazon also carries it.

And, once you get it cleared up, you have to keep an eye out for ear infections in the future.
I could catch them early by scratching my dogs ears at the base (below the ear hole) and listening for a sticky wet sound. Then I used the Zymox mentioned above and have not had a problem since. I have 3 toy poodles the before Zymox probably had an ear infection once every 6 months or so.

This is what we use. It is pricey, but worth it. Once you get the problem under control, you can just use the zymox as a preventative.
We tried to go cheap and my poor dog's ears got so itchy - we went back to it.
Before we tried zymox we got a script from the vet. It was effective too. So, you might want to go to the vet first and then use zymox as a routine to follow up vet care.

Ear infection. Ottomax is a good product to use. You need to take your pup to the vet. They will flush the ears and give you a Rx. If you don’t it’ll only get worse and your pup could have permanent hearing loss. You could clean the outer ear canal but don’t try to clean deep into the ear itself. DONT use a Q-tip PLEASEeeee.

Be careful, I found my dog had a reaction to zymox that caused hot spots. Not saying it's bad for everyone though!

Very likely that she has a yeast infection. Not at all uncommon in 'floppy eared' dogs, and even more common if they are on a grain based diet.

Yes, you need a vet visit. Once you get it treated I would look at the dogs diet.
Allergies, particularly food allergies can manifest as chronic ear infections. Had one many years ago, took a long time to ID the issue as food allergies, she ended up with hearing loss.

Okay, I will get some kind of medication for her ears.. I also heard that someone else has a lab with bad smelling ears, and they would give her drops for the ears, and the smell never went away.. Why would that be?

Dogs ear canals are nothing like ours. It smells because it’s growing nasty infection inside. You can wipe the outter canals but you’ll need a vet to get to the inner canal. The sooner you go the less it’s going to cost you. You don’t want to let it go to the point that you’re paying for sedation. In cases like this the sooner you go the better for your pup and your wallet!
