Why do my girls do this?

I'm using orange plastic easter eggs, the kind that are split in half and can be opened up. I half-filled them with sand, and put them in my practice nest box...still waiting...

Answering the decoy eggs question.... you can go to a craft store or a department store craft section and look for wooden ones..... or just use white golf balls.

Here's a link to what you might be looking for..... white or brown/wood color:

Any craft store should have the wooden eggs...I personally just used plastic Easter eggs. I filled them with sand and taped them shut so they couldn't be kicked out of the boxes easily...so far so good. 3 hens laying...all in the boxes

I used a yellow one and an orange one, but I don't think the color matters really.

If you look closely you can see them in the boxes here :

I got a set of Reds and Ameraucanas that are 1 month apart in age, and the groups still seperate when ranging or roosting! They don't squabble, but they definitely stay to their groups.

Will they ever blend into one flock? They've been mingling for at least a month...

they may stay that way until cooped for winter. I have had several that stayed grouped as I put them in the coop and I have had them also group by their coloring (ie: all the red birds together, all the black birds together didn't matter when they were introduced to the coop)

Agree. Being locked up a lot for winter solidifies the group continuity. Mingling always creates tension as the pecking order, that high holiest of holies in the chicken social structure finds there is a disturbance in the force. Do they sort it out? yes. Can it sometimes be rough? often. It is still amazing to me, after all these years, just how tight, detailed and specific this social ordering really is. Incredible.
