Why do people want to sell the wrong breeds????????????????????????????

I bought what I thought was a RIR. I have one in my flock from last year, but my new "RIR" is not feathering out dark feathers and the new chick is very tiny. Definately a mixup. I'm a tad disappointed, but I'm sure I'll be happy in the end.

I either have a New Hampshire or a red sex link. What a bummer, but I heard they both lay nice eggs.

I was at a flea market one time. Some old guy had a couple of chickens in a cage, one of them a big Barred Rock rooster, and though I didn't get too close to those birds, as I never want to do that at a flea market, most seeming less than healthy, I said casually, "Nice big Barred Rock rooster you have there." He was astounded and said, "You know, you're the first person all day who has called that rooster by the right breed name! Everybody else called him a Dominecker."

Had a big disagreement with a woman manning the counter at one of the feed stores. Apparently, Privett hatchery mislabeled a group of Barred Rocks as Dominiques, though the label was written "Dominecker". Looking at a sea of single combs, I informed her that the label was wrong, that they were BRs, seeing as how I'd bred them for years. Even upon picking up a book of chicken breeds next to the brooder and showing her the difference, she was dubious because some FFA kid hadn't noticed anything amiss.

C'mon, if I know anything, I know my BRs. You cannot fix willing ignorance.

Some of it is that folks have no eye for detail. They call a Delaware a Brahma or a White Rock a Delaware, etc. Some just see a striped chicken as a Dominecker, no matter what else it has, white legs, single comb, whatever.

Willing ignorance the quote/phrase of the day to ponder on. LOL I had never ever thought of combining those 2 words but it is so sad but true, huh?

Around my area, "Dominecker" is any black and white barred chicken.

Advertised some barred rocks once in the local paper and had people come to look at them just to see what they were.

Then they'd just roll their eyes and say "that's just a Dominecker.......

I know, I know. Folks would see my BR rooster and say, hey, is that a Dominecker? Um, nope, it's a Barred Plymouth Rock, different breed. They would look at me like I had two heads. Oh, well, I don't want Dominiques. I like my Barred Rocks. And I don't want none of them thar "Domineckers".

I never knew what a dominecker was. I thought they were all barred rocks cause I never knew what a barred rock was till BYC. In fact I was so bad at chicken knowledge the only chicken breed I knew was game cocks and the rest I called white/red chicken.

Surely, you've heard of "Foghorn Leghorn"

I too had never heard of Dominecker/Dominique chickens. I had seen some black/white chickens and when I saw what these black chicks were suppose to grow up to be, I wanted them. I bought these chicks because of what they would look like...the other chickens bought were for egg production reasons instead of aesthetics. The only ones I can honestly say knew of before BYC are Polish, Rhode Island Red and Leghorn. I don''t think I even knew what a bantam was.

I am noticing that more craigslisters are listing Easter Eggers instead of A******cana (which ever breed they think they got). Change is always slow but it does happen.
