Why do ready-to-lay hens squat or dance

Yah, quite a bit of build up for about 3 seconds of contact. Here's more info you probably didn't want to know: roosters got no boy parts. There is no penetration, just a brief "cloacal kiss" of vent to vent. Kinda makes you wonder what the rooster has to crow about when he dismounts, huh?

At the risk of making it worse....

You should also be told that in hen-only flocks, sometimes the alpha hen will um... "take the rooster's turn" and jump on the submitting hens. We get about a dozen "are my hens gay" threads each year. Nope, just different rules when you're a chicken.

Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for that!

I usually stroke mine until they get up themselves, after a few pats.

LT doesn't though, she must be pretty desperate for some action because she won't budge until I physically shake her and push her away from me

That hen was a caution to be reckoned with, she jumped on LT and she jumped onto Cherry... the poor pullets squawked, wondering who this strange molestor was
