Why do so many of you buy so many chicks?

double? you are thinking small...go for exponential growth!

My bad... you are probably correct.

We have alot because we raise them for meat, eggs and to have stock to sell plus keeping stock to breed for next year.
We usually have from 300 to 400 chickens of different ages on the farm during the summer. Of course we also have a few that are pets, and I also have several breeds that I raise and to be able to cull and keep the very best for next years breeders I have to hatch out lots of them every year.

We also sell started pullets just at laying age
We sell young roosters for meat
We sell fresh farm eating eggs
We sometimes sell hatching eggs
And we sell some for pets

Plus I'm addicted, big time!
Being crazy might have something to do with it too.

Right now I'm doing good, only about a 100 chickens on the place and about three dozen eggs in the incubator.

I like your way of thinking !! I may need to use that one! My DH gave me a 10 chicken limit, and I had 10 up until Sunday....then I got a Serama .... but they are so little, they only count as about 1/6 th of a normal sized chicken, so 10-1/6, can still be rounded down to 10.

Its when I get 3 more Seramas, that I have to actually start rounding up to 11.

go for it! then claim it must have been a mix up! you order 2 of number 5...it is believable

Hah! Good idea. I am tempted. I can see that this forum will be a good influence on me. hehe

Ok I just about spit my soda all over

" some of us don't like our neighbors"

I keep thinking, my neighbors are so mad..they saw the coops go out.. And I have almost 4 acres and put them, literally at the side of my yard..but I did that because I wanted them closer to me, and where we all spend our time..

But boy I wonder what they are saying at those family dinners...

Love it! My one neighbor is a huge pain in the rumpus...but she hates Everything! All other neighbors love it.

you need to relearn chicken math...you can't count birds that don't lay...ordered birds don't count because you can't count your chickens before they hatch...seramas aren't really chickens...and i like bantams but them things is small so they really don't count...plus anything with a name doesn't count cuz it is family...see how I am going here...besides he said the limit was per pen...right? so obviously you need more birds

Thatis anew one...being accused of being a good influence...nobody will believe this one

Last May my family decided to purchase 12 chicks instead of the 6 we had originally planned on strictly because of the number of predators & odds that at least half would end up food for something. Then my Mom wanted 2 BLRWs(Blue Laced Red Wyandottes)... so we ordered those. within a couple of months we realized we had 2 cockerels. All the hens started laying sometime around October to November... what to do with all the fertilized eggs...??

So of course we went out and purchased an LG incubator! We soon sold one of the roos to a farm in RI. Then my family decided that we would like to sell eggs.. so the Craigslist searching began. Next thing you know we are making a 5 hr round trip for 14 FREE pullets(8 Barred Rocks & 6 Easter Eggers) all born this last spring!
Now we have a grand total of 26 hens, 1 rooster, 31 chicks, and 6 developing eggs in the incubator.

Like the others have said... these feathered little buggers are addicting!
