Why do they like this particular spot so much?

They do feel very safe around him. He's a very calm cat and hasn't shown much interest in them since day one (hence hasn't stood his ground I guess or intimidated them in any way).

I kind of got the impression they like him because every time he went into the garden they came out from under the bush. They never attacked him or anything though, they just follow him around a little and seem curious about what he does. But then again I'm completely new to chickens and am still learning about their behaviour so I probably misread the signs.

So what you're saying is that your chickens treat your cat like a flock of crows treat a hawk.

I think most of those "scaring" devices work on wild birds that will fly off when disturbed. Firmly planted walking-about chickens at their own home, I don't think it'd have much effect. I've got a "chasey dog" and they don't let that deter them from going wherever they want, I don't think a fake owl would work on mine, they know the backyard is their kingdom and nobody can tell them otherwise.

Yeah you're probably right. any other way to make that area undesirable?
