Why do we love chickens so much?

They are very meditative, I love sitting in the yard watching them peck peck peck all around me, its peaceful.

I think more than any of my other animals I don't expect them to act in accordance to my wishes:
the cats are expected to stay off the counters, not scratch the furniture, poop in a certain place,
the dogs are expected to be polite, stay off the furniture, obey my commands, not tug on the leash,
the chickens are allowed to just be chickens and that makes me feel more relaxed around them.

They give me food (and are food), my plants love their poop, they clean up kitchen scraps

I also like the concept of having chickens. I have always cooked, canned, sewn, grown food and done other homey things. They fit into my concept of myself as being self reliant and resourceful.

They are soft and fun to pet

They are so funny - we love watching them fight over meal worms and beg to be let out to free range

But I think the #1 reason I love my chickens so much is that
THEY PUT THEMSELVES TO BED BETTER THAN MY OWN CHILDREN!

Because they are absolutely AWESOME.... They are honest with you, they are cuddly, they are incredibly intelligent, they love back massages and dustbathing even on my tummy when I'm wearing a soft jumper.... They are very clean and mostly very quiet, and they really do make fantastic pets (the only problem is with roosters crowing, our boys live on the farm while the girls I can freely take home).

They have fun personalities and they are always happy to see you! It doesn't hurt that they reward you every day!

I've loved all kinds of animals since I can remember. I told my dad when I was 4 or 5 that when I grew up I was going to move to the country and live on a big farm with lots of animals. Instead, I married a rancher, but we raised our first flock last year. My DH enjoys them almost as much as I do. When he comes home from jogging, he usually heads for the backyard to cool off and hang out with me and the chickens. He finds them as amusing and beneficial as I do. (He even gives them treats too!) I always knew I would enjoy them, I just never figured I'd be obsessed. Even people at work have started asking me questions when someone they know has a problem or concern with anything chicken related! I love everything about raising them and caring for them.

Started keeping chickens, geese, ducks and guineas this spring after many years without them. Wow, i missed their company! Most of my birds are pets, I will not spend another day in my life without my birds! They are my comfort "warm fuzzy" time, no matter my mood, i am 3x happier after 10 minutes with my feathered family. When they come out of the coop cage for the afternoon, i have guineas on my shoulders, chickens fighting for my lap, and geese at my feet tugging my pant leg to be pet. My ducks fly laps around me, it just warms your heart.
In my flock, every bird may not have a name. But every one has something special about them. Some do have names, usually the most rotten ones that are always getting in trouble LOL. Spike, one of my wyandotte hens... she is pure walking, balking trouble on 2 feet!!! (SPIKE! STOP PECKING THE GUINEAS!!! Spike, you cannot eat foam!!!!) And my sweet African goose WeeWee, she is my favorite of all. She patiently waits, and when Mommy's alone, she tugs the back of my shirt. waits...tugs.. then she says weweeewee? sooo quietly...tug, tug...weweweee? So she gets 1st class mommy "lap time" .
I also raise meat chickens. I told myself i would treat the meaties differently.. HA!

How can you not give your love to those adorable little faces? Their time here with my family, they will know love, and freedom to range 5 acres. I do not clip wings, every one of my birds can fly (and do!) They choose to return to their safe home in the evening. They spend most of the time with our piglet, Bacon. Can't wait to add dairy goats in the spring, I am sure they will make friends quickly too.

I love my chickdren as i call them, aka, chicken-children, lol!

I have problems sometimes with depression; with being a mom and not working, staying inside four walls and everyday doing the same jobs. Watching the chickens in the garden bring me joy, they have their own personalities. I like the interactions between Henny (my fave) and myself, she clucks when she sees me and follows me everywhere. Had her from a chick.

Watching chickens is like watching tropical fish - relaxing.
