We got ours in an effort to be more self sufficient. The plan was to get some pullets, raise 'me until they produced eggs, eat the fresh eggs & then eat the birds when their egg production declined. Took less than a week of knowing them before I knew that our sound, logical, well thought out plan wasn't going to happen. Took me another week to work up the courage to tell the Mr that we were "running an old age home for hens now." So now we do it for chicken cuddles, companionship, pure entertainment, the joy of taking care of animals who enjoy having us around, and eggs. Oh and I'm crazy about their beautiful feathers! They groom and pull 'me out, I pick 'em up. And those fuzzy, feathers from their fluffy egg butts are just the best, aren't they? Can't imagine life without 'em!

I got mine because I had never been to a farm until just a few years ago. ( I am 55) I lived on an island some of my life and in or around the city for a few years. I have been out in the country..the puckers for 19 years. For me it's a "never had such" a thing. I like everything except the poops. I like to incubate them, eat the eggs and then eat the chicken after it's done it's job. I am big on..do not waste. There is not anything I have not done in the processing of the chicken. It's all good. I don't really consider them pets. I name them so I can tell hubby who is doing what. yeah bad soap opera.

They are kinda of fun to watch sometimes when they find something new.

I am new to raising chickens and initially did it for the eggs. But honestly they are great pets and each one has it's own personality.

I plain to raise meat chickens next year since I'm trying to get me and my family to eat humane meat so we don't support factory farms. Also, we might eat the chickens a year or two after they stop laying.... Mine aren't really pets since they hate me....... Sorry.
Oh I'm not judging. That's fine! That's one of chickens' uses!
