I choose all my chickens in the heavy breed catagory because I let them freerange when I am home and we have a fair number of resident hawks. With the exception of my smallest gold laced wyandotte last Spring, the hawks leave them alone. The loss was my fault believing they were big enough and old to be out and about. Lesson learned.

I love my Wyandotes for their gorgeous coloring, my australorpe for her "grand dame" beauty and demeanor, my barred for her sweetness and last my one EE for her participation. My oldest girl, my EE has rallied more than once to join the flock in all their activities, up and down the hills, scratching in the orchard and laying one beautiful blue egg almost every day. She is a trouper.
