Why do you own ducks?

I hadn’t actually owned/procured any ducks until I bought my homestead property and a resident Pekin came with it. Once I began researching ducks’ needs, and the Pekin suddenly having a watered down generic imprint on us, I obtained two more so that the original resident ducky could have “flockmates” for necessary socializing.

All the books I’ve bought and read, everything on the Internet I’ve researched, etc., said the eggs were beyond compare and more nutritious/healthy.

So I figured the eggs were a bonus to companionable.

I’ve tried the eggs: I’m not a fan which sucks because i REALLY want to like them. Fresh eggs and all...

So I still gather the eggs, hubs eats them and when I do any baking I intend to try that. Otherwise I just save eggs for husband Grumpy and my ‘sorta dad’.

Ooh. I hope I like the eggs. I should go get some locally to see if I do. I see you are a Hooiser too!

My husband asked why I wanted ducks. Um, because they are cute. Isn't that enough of a reason? Honestly, I have read so much about them, I think I will enjoy keeping them more than I enjoy keeping chickens. But, I still love my chickens.
I have never eaten a duck egg or duck meat. Maybe I should go get some local eggs to at least try them? Or just jump all the way in and don't look back!

Pets. I like to eat duck now and again, maybe 2-3 times per year but it would be silly to raise them for that! I am not particularly fond of duck eggs. Honestly, I am not a big egg eater to begin with. Maybe 2-3 eggs per week. Even my chickens are pets, mostly, who happen to produce eggs that I eat/sell as an added bonus. The ducks are freeloaders though! That is okay.

I keep mine for pets, eggs, and Of course yard candys! What doesn't make a yard look better and more attractive then free roaming beautiful ducks! And not just any ducks! These ducks will swarm you looking for attention and treats as you approach the front door! I can't get myself to eat any of the ducks I've raised from egg to adult. And if I had any extras there is always some else wanting them as a pet so they get re-homed!
Also my son is allergic to chicken eggs, so ducks come in handy!

I had never tried duck eggs prior to suddenly being gifted with two of them a day. The yolks are amazing. The whites don’t (seemingly) get as hard as regular chicken eggs. I Imagine that is why people swear by the moistness that duck eggs add to baked goods.

It’s just that they have a bit of a gamey taste to them. I know what they eat will affect their egg flavors but I don’t think there’s a way to take nature out of an egg.

I like deer meat’s gamey flavor (god love me some deer jerky!) so I think it’s just the mental/mind over matter thing that basically I’m expecting a certain flavor and am presented with something else.

But! All things being fair; I like my eggs over hard so the egg white issue is strictly me. Plus, like the one above me, I’m not a huuuuuge egg person. Sulfur
Anything gives me the blahs due to some experiences.

I hope you like them. But if you don’t, pass them off to someone who does and just keep enjoying your companions.

We have them for all of the above!

• They are simply adorable and fun to watch. They are happy animals in the barnyard and our's rarely look for trouble.
• The eggs are great for baking, ok for eating - prefer them scrambled, and sell very well when you have too many.
• The meat, when properly cooked, is absolutely wonderful. Properly seared, marinated duck breast rivals a good steak. Duck and dumplings beats chicken and dumplings any day of the week. Homemade duck broth is excellent for a variety of purposes and the rendered fat is superb.
